This book studies the connections between the political reform of the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands around 1500 and the sixteenth-century religious reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. It argues that the character of the political changes (dispersed sovereignty, local autonomy) prevented both a general reformation of the Church before 1520 and a national reformation thereafter. The resulting settlement maintained the public peace through politically structured religious communities (confessions), thereby avoiding further religious strife and fixing the confessions into the Empire's constitution. The Germans' emergence into the modern era as a people having two national religions was the reformation's principal legacy to modern Germany.

Auch der Umgang der Historiker mit der deutschen Reformation des fruhen 16. Jahrhunderts kennt Konjunkturen. Aus dem Tal des Desinteresses, in das die Forschung sie zwischen 1918 und 1960 hat fallen lassen, ist sie strahlend wieder auferstanden. Langst nicht mehr das epochemachende Ereignis in der Geschichte der deutschen Nation, als das Ranke sie ein- und zugeordnet hatte, wird die Reformation heute zwischen Spatmittelalter und Fruhmoderne verortet und bewusst in das europaische Beziehungsgeflecht eingebunden. Nichtsdestoweniger folgen die Beitrage des vorliegenden Bandes unterschiedlichen Deutungsansatzen, interpretieren die Reformation des 16. Jahrhunderts aus dem Geist des 14. und vor allem des langen 15. Jahrhunderts, setzen sie in Bezug zum Wandel furstlicher Herrschaft und der Entwicklung kommunaler Eigenstandigkeiten, der Krise burgerlichen Wertedenkens und wirtschaftlicher Umbruche. Theologische Neubestimmungen und kirchliche Verfallserscheinungen werden vor dem Hintergrund einer langfristigen individuellen und kollektiven Emanzipation diskutiert - wobei mit der Betonung eines derartigen prozessualen historischen Kontinuums eine Anderung der Sprachregelung einhergeht, die die Reformation zu einer Reformation werden lasst.
