Die Monographie untersucht anhand der deutschen Franziskaner den Anteil der Bettelmoenche am sozialen Wandel des spaten Mittelalters. Die Bettelmoenche strebten danach, die in einem starken Wandel befindliche Gesellschaft des spateren Mittelalters zu reglementieren. Dies geschah durch die Kombination scheinbar widerspruchlicher Entwicklungen: der Verchristlichung individueller Freiheiten bei gleichzeitiger Etablierung neuartiger Kontrollmechanismen. So verkoerpert das exemplarisch dargestellte Wirken der fruhen deutschen Franziskaner die Dialektik gesellschaftlicher Diversifizierungsprozesse, welches Europa nicht nur im Mittelalter pragte.
