The Battle for Europe brings into sharp focus the historical
importance of the current Eurozone crisis. Thomas Fazi argues that
European Union (EU) elites have seized on the financial crash to
push through damaging neoliberal policies, undermining social
cohesion and vital public services. Drawing on a wealth of sources,
Fazi argues that the EU's austerity policies are not simply a case
of political and ideological short-sightedness, but part of a
long-term project by elites to remove the last remnants of the
welfare state and complete the neoliberal project. As well as an
urgent critique of the EU and monetary union as currently
constituted, The Battle for Europe showcases a programme for
progressive reform and outlines how citizens and workers of Europe
can radically overhaul EU institutions.
The crisis of the neoliberal order has resuscitated a political
idea widely believed to be consigned to the dustbin of history.
Brexit, the election of Donald Trump, and the neo-nationalist,
anti-globalisation and anti-establishment backlash engulfing the
West all involve a yearning for a relic of the past: national
sovereignty. In response to these challenging times, economist
William Mitchell and political theorist Thomas Fazi reconceptualise
the nation state as a vehicle for progressive change. They show how
despite the ravages of neoliberalism, the state still contains
resources for democratic control of a nation's economy and
finances. The populist turn provides an opening to develop an
ambitious but feasible left political strategy. Reclaiming the
State offers an urgent, provocative and prescient political
analysis of our current predicament, and lays out a comprehensive
strategy for revitalising progressive economics in the 21st
century.

During the first years of the pandemic, the political mainstream
agreed that 'following the science' with hard lockdowns and vaccine
mandates was the best way to preserve life. But social science
reveals the true human cost of this policy. The Covid Consensus
provides an internationalist-left perspective on the world's
Covid-19 response, which has had devastating consequences for
democratic rights and the poor worldwide. As the fortunes of the
richest soared, nationwide shutdowns devastated small businesses,
the working classes and the Global South's informal economies.
Gender-based violence surged, and the mental health of young people
was severely compromised. Meanwhile, unprecedented health
restrictions prevented participation in daily life without proof of
vaccination. Toby Green and Thomas Fazi argue that these policies
grossly exacerbated existing trends of inequality, mediatisation
and surveillance, with grave implications for the future. Rich in
human detail, The Covid Consensus tackles head-on the refusal of
the global political class and mainstream media to report the true
extent of the erosion of democratic processes and the socioeconomic
assault on the poor. As the world emerges from the pandemic to
confront new modes of monitoring and control, this left-wing
reappraisal of global Covid policies exposes the injustices and
political failings that have produced the biggest crisis since the
Second World War.
