The Irish have a long and proud history in America, and New Jersey
is no exception. Beginning with the first Irish immigrants who
settled in every corner of the state, this vital ethnic community
has left an indelible mark on all facets of life in the Garden
State. New Jersey's Irish natives expressed their own discontent
over British oppression by battling alongside colonists in the
American Revolution. Brave Fenians fought to preserve their new
home in the Civil War. New Jersey's Irish also have become
professional athletes, United States Representatives, religious
leaders, spies and business trailblazers. Author and Irish heritage
researcher Tom Fox relays these and other stories that demonstrate
the importance of Ireland to the development of New Jersey and the
United States.
This volume explores how a political and social theory of
writing can inform pedagogy, including an analysis of how students'
educational histories limit teacher and student roles, and how we
might work to enlarge both. Through a critique of ethnography and
an exploration of Friere's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the author
develops an interactive theory of teaching writing. In three
central chapters, the volume treats gender, class and race issues
in the teaching of writing by examining case studies of freshman
writers. Within the case studies, the author shows how an
interactive pedagogy helps students see how socially-held values,
such as beauty, objectivity, upward mobility, and assimilation
deeply affect how students write. The case studies give a sense of
actuality to the author's ideas. Finally, the author argues that
interpretation should replace evaluation as the central activity of
writing courses.
On December 7, 1864, William McGee, a drummer boy from Newark, New
Jersey, was credited with leading a Federal force to a decisive
victory over the Confederates in a clash just thirty miles from the
carnage at Franklin. This 15-year-old Irish-American, on
convalescent duty and acting as an orderly to General Lovell
Rousseau, was recognized for the capture of two guns, several
hundred prisoners, and the saving of Fortress Rosecrans in
Murfreesboro from the famed Nathan Bedford Forrest. For his
actions, young McGee would soon be awarded a Medal of Honor,
written up in newspapers and books as a glorious New Jersey legend,
be commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Army at age
18, and then, inexplicably at the height of his notoriety,
virtually disappear from history for more than 100 years. This is
the story of a lost war hero, a man-child with the world at his
feet, whose fall from grace is accelerated by fame, lies, alcohol,
bigamy, and murder.
"To understand why people say 'Dear old Kansas " is to understand
that Kansas is no mere geographical expression, but a 'state of
mind, ' a religion, and a philosophy in one," writes historian Carl
Becker in the classic 1910 essay that leads off this volume. Like
Becker, the twelve other essayists and four poets try to map the
spiritual topography of Kansas and explain why this particular
patch of prairie is so dear. They share the conviction that Kansas
represents something powerful, something significant, something
noteworthy. The seventeen selections are put into perspective by
Thomas Fox Averill's headnotes and introductory essay, which makes
its own contribution to our understanding of Kansas. The essays and
poems (all previously published except for the last essay) are
arranged chronologically, from the earliest (1910) to the most
recent (1990). Illustrated with woodcuts from the Prairie
Print-makers.
In June 1866-a year after the American Civil War-an 800-man
contingent of the Irish Fenian Brotherhood invaded Canada from
Buffalo, New York, to free Ireland from British rule. The force was
led by Irish-born John Charles O'Neill, a veteran of the 5th
Indiana Cavalry. The three-day invasion was a military success but
a political failure. Yet the 28-year old O'Neill was celebrated for
his leadership and humanity. Elevated to the presidency of the
Brotherhood, "General" John O'Neill would again lead Irish
nationalists against Canada in 1870. Jailed and later pardoned by
President U.S. Grant, O'Neill left the Fenians and attempted a
third, futile attack into Canada from North Dakota. His
revolutionary career at an end, O'Neill became a colonizer, urging
Irish Americans to abandon urban communities in the East to settle
on the fertile plains of the West. O'Neill City, Nebraska, is named
in his honor. This first full-length biography covers the rise,
fall and resurgence of a remarkable figure in American and Irish
history.
Raised in the traditional kitchen from which his mother runs her
Buen AppeTito catering service, Weston Tito Hingler's childhood is
shaped by the foods he eats, especially those he must try before he
is allowed to enter the Tsil Cafe where his father invites--and at
times challenges--diners to experience foods of the New World
cooked New Mexican style. Filled with recipes and definitions of
New World ingredients, Averill's novel follows Wes as he navigates
his way through the duelling cuisines of his passionate parents and
the signature recipes of his life.

It's Christmas, and Carol Dickens's life is in major transition.
Her son Finn, a talented trumpet player, is about to leave for
college. Her ex-husband, a real-estate wheeler-dealer, wants to
sell their properties in Kansas and move to Arizona. Her
wheelchair-bound friend, Laurence, has fallen in love with her. To
top it all off, Scraps, the family dog, is dying. As her world
spins out of control, Carol seeks refuge in her research on the use
of the semicolon--and in her ritual of cooking the perfect series
of Victorian holiday meals inspired by A Christmas Carol.
It's about bucket lists and a yearn to see the Space Shuttle fly
before it's too late. It's about growing up terrified in a roiling
Cold War. It's about chasing Sputnik down with boyhood rockets.
It's about disheveled students, the ones with two pocket protectors
and zero girlfriends; the amateur radio freaks; the wild-eyed
neighborhood rocket launchers. We would call them "nerds" today,
but in the 1950s, they wore the label "introverts." It was handled
as a disease; a condition to be corrected. They were an uncounted,
unnoticed generation; their diverse curiosities calling them to
self-educate for a challenge yet undefined. But they were
disorganized, rudderless; a solution in search of a problem. So
when John Kennedy made his call, they were ready. I have been
watching the incredible NASA show for near a lifetime, now ... an
epic saga extracted from dreams, bolstered by bravery, tempered
with tears. In my overactive mind, I have erected a rickety
structure of opinions about all of this. Read about them here ...
And then, together, we'll watch the The Last Rocket Show. Includes
dozens of author photos and two original videos]
This early works on Wild Flowers is a fascinating and informative
look at the subject with much of the information still useful and
practical today. Many of the earliest books, particularly those
dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in
affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text
and artwork.
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly
growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by
advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve
the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own:
digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works
in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these
high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts
are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries,
undergraduate students, and independent scholars. This collection
reveals the history of English common law and Empire law in a
vastly changing world of British expansion. Dominating the legal
field is the Commentaries of the Law of England by Sir William
Blackstone, which first appeared in 1765. Reference works such as
almanacs and catalogues continue to educate us by revealing the
day-to-day workings of society.++++The below data was compiled from

Falling under the spell of these short stories by O. Henry
Award-winning author Thomas Fox Averill, a reader might well
wonder: What in the world is ordinary? If there really are "just
plain folks" anywhere at all, they'd surely be in the solid
Midwestern Kansas of Averill's fiction. And yet the "ordinary"
people we meet in these stories lead us into one startling
encounter after another with the mystery, the magic, and, yes, the
transcendence that even the most mundane life secretly holds. In
writing that has been called "lyrical" ("New York Times"),
"compelling" ("Kansas City Star"), and "voluptuous" ("Booklist"),
Averill explores the relationship between fathers and sons, the
dead and the living, the natural and the unnatural. With
crystalline clarity he reveals the ordinary and the extraordinary
genius of a place, a time, a solitary soul embedded in the minutiae
of the everyday: a young boy hunting for a runaway horse; a couple
ostracized in their small town; a grieving high school basketball
star; a child with a voice purer than a tuning fork; a gay son
seeking his father's acceptance; two boys playing bocce with the
parish priest for high stakes--the secret of their birth. If there
is magic in love, in acceptance, in sorrow and solace in all the
usual places, then these stories find that magic with ordinary
genius.
Border Crossings is an accessible and comprehensive overview of the
work of prose fiction writers in what was the German Democratic
Republic. Thomas C. Fox introduces readers to the best and most
important East German writers—among them Christa Wolf, Jurek
Becker, Anna Seghers, Stefan Heym, and Franz Fühmann—restricting
his study to work that is available in English translation so that
readers who do not know German will be able to read for themselves
the literature he discusses. During a period of forty years,
writers in the German Democratic Republic struggled with increasing
success to free themselves from a smothering and paternalistic
governmental embrace, thus anticipating, and helping to constitute,
the events of 1989. In its relentless interrogation of the status
quo, in its persistent ability to create alternatives, and in its
call for more openness, literature in East Germany served as an
outlet for energies and ideas that might have been channeled, in
the West, into politics, philosophy, or journalism. In addition to
discussing the role that literature played in shaping historical
events, Fox shows that it can be appreciated simply as literature,
outside of its political contexts.
