Italian Popular Tales (Hardcover): Thomas Frederick Crane Italian Popular Tales (Hardcover)
Thomas Frederick Crane; Edited by Jack Zipes
R1,702 Discovery Miles 17 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An important reintroduction to this literature, this compilation of Thomas Crane's original translations of Italian folk stories includes new critical analysis. For 19th-century folklorist Thomas Crane, the value of collecting, translating, and reproducing folktales lay in their "internationalism"-their capacity to reveal how the customs of a particular group, no matter how unique, are linked to many others. In his classic collection, edited and updated by contemporary folklorist Jack Zipes, Crane traces the roots of Italian folktales to their origins, often in the Orient, then shows how they diffused in unpredictable and marvelous ways throughout Italy and over the centuries. A contemporary of the brothers Grimm, Crane offers a richer, more complex selection of oral and literary tales. Unlike the Grimms, he doesn't edit or modify the tales, which deal openly with surprisingly contemporary subjects: murder, adultery, incest, child abuse, and brutal vengeance. The first English translations of Italian folktales, now available after more than a century of neglect Critical analysis and notes by the original editor, 19th-century folklorist Thomas Crane

R1,007 Discovery Miles 10 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Forgotten for over a century, this nineteenth-century collection of narratives is re-introduced to the reading public by Jack Zipes, Professor of German and director of the Center for German and European Studies at the University of Minnesota. This edition provides insightful commentary by Jack Zipes on Crane as a folklorist and his collection methods, as well as discussion of historical and modern folklore research and the relevance of these tales in today's world. It also includes Crane's own critical analyses of the stories and their cultural context.

Jacques de Vitry; Edited by Thomas Frederick Crane
R1,322 Discovery Miles 13 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

1890. Jacques de Vitry studied theology at Paris and was ordained as a priest. He preached first in favor of the crusade against the Albigenses. The following year he led a large army of crusaders to the siege of Toulouse. He next preached a crusade against the Saracens. He was then elected bishop of Acre, approved by the Pope and consecrated. Later he again played a prominent role in the crusade; wrote his well known historical work; resigned his bishopric, and devoted himself again to preaching the crusade against the Albigenses; was made a cardinal, and bishop of Tusculum; and finally, was elected patriarch of Jerusalem. His exempla in the sermones vulgares, ad status or ad omne hominum genus, have been edited with great learning by Thomas Frederick Crane, and is considered the best work on the subject.
