In the new global economy, more countries have opened up to international competition and rapid capital flows. However, in the triad the process of globalization is rather asymmetric. With a rising role of multinational companies there are favorable prospects for higher global growth and economic catching-up, respectively. Theoretical analysis suggests key ingredients of sustained growth, but there is also a new concept of a long-term equilibrium income gap in which convergence is rather unlikely. The analysis also picks up European and US labor market issues in the context of economic globalization and raises the question of which EU policies in the field of labor market reform and of innovation policies are adequate.

The papers in this volume deal with the issue of how corpus data relate to the questions that cognitive linguists have typically investigated with respect to conceptual mappings. The authors in this volume investigate a wide range of issues - the coherence and function of particular metaphorical models, the interaction of form and meaning, the identification of source domains of metaphorical expressions, the relationship between metaphor and discourse, the priming of metaphors, and the historical development of metaphors. The studies deal with a variety of metaphorical and metonymic source and target domains, including the source domains: space, animals, body parts, organizations and war, and the target domains verbal activity, economy, emotions and politics. In their studies, the authors present a variety of corpus-linguistic methods for the investigation of conceptual mappings, for example, corpora annotated for semantic categories, concordances of individual source - domain items and patterns, and concordances of target-domain items. In sum, the papers in this volume show how a wide range of corpus-linguistic methods can be used to investigate a variety of issues in cognitive linguistics; the combination of corpus methods with a cognitive-linguistic view of metaphor and metonymy yields new answers to old questions (and to new questions) about the relationship between language as a conceptual phenomenon and language as a textual phenomenon.

How can Africa, the worlda (TM)s most lagging region, benefit from globalisation and achieve sustained economic growth? Africa needs greater investment by Multinational Enterprises (MNEs) to improve competitiveness and generate more growth through positive spill-over effects. Despite the fact that Africaa (TM)s returns on investment averaged 29% since 1990, Africa has gained merely 1% of global Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows. The challenge for African countries is how to be a more desirable destination for FDI. The study integrates three currents of economic research, namely from the literature on (endogenous) economic growth, convergence and regional integration, the explanations for Africaa (TM)s poor growth and the growing understanding of the role of MNEs in a global economy. The empirical side of the book is based on an econometric study of the determinants of FDI in Africa as well as a detailed firm-level survey conducted in 2000.

The rapid development of information and communication technologies has been one of the major issues in the world economy of the last decade. Especially, the fast growth of the Internet has introduced completely new economic and related issues, like world-wide Electronic Commerce and its taxing, telework activities, distance learning, and so on. It has become possible to split organizations into small units which may form an electronically connected network taking new shapes in a flexible way. Since the growth of the Internet has been fast and fairly uncontrolled, a strong need for new laws, sometimes called Cyberlaw, has emerged. On the other hand, the individual skills of information technologies may be of critical importance to the success of a person in his or her professional career. This book presents a novel analysis of Particle Movement from the point of view of psycholinguistics. As well as examining the methodology of Particle Movement, the study addresses more theoretical questions. It is argued that some theories of how language is produced by the brain cannot explain the results found in practical studies, and Gries therefore looks at the relative merits of more interactive models of language production. This book presents a new analysis of the word-order alternation of English transitive phrasal verbs (aka Particle Movement) from a cognitive-functional and psycholinguistic perspective.
