From German unification in 1871 through the early 1960s, confessional tensions between Catholics and Protestants were a source of deep division in German society. Engaging this period of historic strife, Germany and the Confessional Divide focuses on three traumatic episodes: the Kulturkampf waged against the Catholic Church in the 1870s, the collapse of the Hohenzollern monarchy and state-supported Protestantism after World War I, and the Nazi persecution of the churches. It argues that memories of these traumatic experiences regularly reignited confessional tensions. Only as German society became increasingly secular did these memories fade and tensions ease.

As the birthplace of the Reformation, Germany has been the site of some of the most significant moments in the history of European Christianity. Mit den Industrie- und Gewerbeausstellungen etablierte sich in Deutschland seit den 1830er Jahren ein neues Massenmedium. Beflugelt von, aber auch in Abgrenzung zu den Weltausstellungen entstand eine neue Form von Offentlichkeit. In den Reprasentationen der Ausstellungen wurden Zukunftsentwurfe und Fortschrittsvisionen visualisiert und diskutiert. Hier bot sich aber auch ein Forum, um uber die soziale und okonomische Entwicklung der Industriegesellschaft zu debattieren. Schon den Zeitgenossen galten die Ausstellungen als industrielle Leistungsschau, Parade burgerlicher Selbstdarstellung, Demonstration der industriellen Massen- und Konsumkultur, aber eben auch als "Wallfahrtsstatte zum Fetisch Ware" (Walter Benjamin) sichtbar wird daher die gesellschaftliche Selbstverstandigung im 19. und fruhen 20. Jahrhundert."

Die historische Unternehmensforschung hat derzeit Konjunktur. Die Medien interessieren sich aber vor allem fur die Vorgange wahrend der nationalsozialistischen Diktatur, zumeist beschrankt auf die Rolle der Grossunternehmen und die Zwangsarbeiterfrage. Die Problemstellungen der modernen Unternehmensgeschichtsforschung lassen sich jedoch keineswegs auf diese Gebiete reduzieren. Anyone who is interested in the critical intensifications in Cold War politics cannot avoid analyzing the cultures of decision-making behind these processes. As a top event, the Cuban Missile Crisis stands for how setting the wrong course on the part of the politicians involved could have led the world to the nuclear war. "Whoever shoots first is dead second," was how an American general summed up the game theory dilemma in these decades. But not only in the military, but also in many other political contexts, West and East confronted each other politically, economically and with regard to the respective social policy and shaped their own styles of decision-making in delimitation and in parallel with each other. The competition to the respective opponent, the belief in the feasibility of political visions and the control of society drove the theoretical as well as practical efforts.
