When Evelyn receives a deathbed letter from her mother, Melanie, instructing her to keep an eye on her dad, Paddy, there's nothing Evelyn can do but take the words to heart. Evelyn's mother knew Paddy well enough to worry. Their marriage was Paddy's cornerstone of strength, and Melanie knows her death will profoundly affect her dedicated husband. With Melanie gone-and Evelyn living many miles away from her father-there is no one to watch over Paddy. Evelyn does her best, but she can't be by his side every second. She hopes he'll find someone to love. When he meets Charlene, it looks like he may have found a passionate companion, but their love does much more than move Paddy's heart. His new relationship ignites a passion in his soul that inspires him to seek out his unfulfilled accomplishment of becoming a playwright. He's been through the gamut of prosperity and pain, he has much to write, and, most importantly, he knows how to laugh through his trouble. He's finally ready to share his wisdom with an audience. Despite difficulties, health problems, and his own impending mortality, Paddy is consumed by his goal to fulfill his lifelong dream.
Brilliant scientist Aaron VanDieter has a promising future. If he can discover the means for DNA messengers to synthesize proteins, genetic mutation for behavioral modification could be possible, greatly affecting the mental health field. But VanDieter's less-than-moral research methods lead his employer to condemn his efforts. Undaunted, VanDieter forms his own behavioral modification institute in Louisiana. In his quest to discover the causes and cures for mental disorders, VanDieter enlists the services of several other neurobiological professionals. John Ventalero, a seemingly introverted bioengineer, turns out to be plagued with multiple personalities, while Shomi Mashita, a Japanese psychiatrist, is at odds with VanDieter almost immediately. But it is Lamil Gupta, a lovely Indian emigre from Bombay, who endeavors to make VanDieter understand the human price for obtaining ends regardless of the means. Science and morality collide as VanDieter digs deeper into the mind's dark recesses. But when a serial killer suddenly unleashes terror on local women, VanDieter's finds himself caught up in a chilling examination of true evil. Gripping and terrifying in its scope, "Within the Dark Recesses" is a chilling look at the sinister side of the human mind.
From the time Jeff Kendrick and Joshua Allison Beaumont became roommates at Harlan's Preparatory School in San Francisco, they maintained a roller-coaster-like relationship. Though they followed divergent paths, their lives were bonded by fate. Each was mutually driven in their quest for military careers, but Beaumont, better known as Jab, flunked the West Point entrance exam and eventually became a pilot for a Central American drug cartel-flying at least ten thousand kilos of drugs out of Panama during the last two years. Jeff Kendrick's life takes a different path-pursuing a notable career in public service as an agent for the Drug Enforcement Administration and later as a college professor. When Jab refuses to sabotage a plane for the cartel, he fears his life is in danger and flees to the United States. Hoping to save his life, Jab requests the aid of Kendrick, who rejoins the DEA to help decipher the conspiracy. Jab and Kendrick are assisted in the mission by Danielle von Sedvels, a sociologist and expert in Peruvian politics. The three become irrevocably united as they join forces for a concerted and dangerous action against narco-terrorists bent on attacking US vital interests in the Panama Canal.
Albert Polzen had entertained hopes of becoming a professional composer for much of his life before answering the call of duty as an officer in the German army. When he is captured by the Russians and becomes a POW, he turns to his music for solace. With little hope of returning to his new wife, Seldi, he immerses himself in the composition of an operetta to mentally escape his captivity as he could not physically. At the same time, military intelligence and political manipulation twist and reshape the progress of the German war effort. Meanwhile, Albert's former lover, Hannilore, uses coded information obtained from her husband to uncover a high-level Nazi official who has become a spy for the Soviets. "Phoenix Arising" examines the mind of a man who has been thrown into the depths of despair but finds his salvation in the creation of music that will become his legacy. Love, music, and espionage intertwine to tell the gripping story of power plays and personal choices that will decide the fate of all involved.
