Die Elegien des Properz wie die des Tibull sind nicht dem
feierlichen Ton verpflichtet, der bei Klopstock und Holderlin
erklingt; neben vielem, das tief und ernst und schon ist, entzuckt
das Launige, das Spielerische romantischer Einfalle, das leicht
Skurrile - wie im Dialog der Haustur mit dem ausgesperrten
Liebhaber (Properz I 16). Ob Cynthia, ob Tibulls Delia, die schonen
Romerinnen zur Zeit des Augustus begegnen uns als kluge,
leidenschaftliche, zartliche, aber oft auch grausame Frauen, und
das Liebesverhaltnis der Dichter zu ihnen ist bestandigem Wechsel
unterworfen. Wer je durchbohrt wurde von einem Pfeil "dieses
Knaben," wird in den anmutigen Versen allenthalben dem eigenen
Sehnen, dem eigenen Wuten und Hoffen und Zweifeln begegnen. Eine
jahrzehntewahrende "Liebesbeziehung" des Ubersetzers und
Herausgebers Georg Luck zu beiden Dichtern hat bei dieser
Neuauflage zu vielen Textumstellungen und Verschiebungen der
Gedichtsgrenzen gefuhrt, die grosste Uberraschung wird meist sein:
wie man je eine andere Zuordnung hat vornehmen konnen."
