John McMorrow, a young philosophy professor from Clarksburg,
Virginia, abandons his home and position to fight for the Union
during the Civil War. He leaves behind a budding love affair with
Anna Lee Stone--and a father whose sympathies are firmly entrenched
with the Confederacy. He marches off to battle, his moral values
tested by fire, while those at home face the monumental struggles
of war's harsh reality.
