Object-oriented database management systems (OODBMS) are expected to serve advanced application domains such as engineering design, office information systems, imaging systems, and multimedia. This book, based on a NATO Advanced Research Workshop, covers all aspects of object-oriented database systems from design principles to implementation of prototypes. Topics covered include model concepts, query optimization, query languages, functional programming formalism, storage systems, transaction models, interoperability, distributed computing, rule languages, open architectures, hypermedia systems, and many others. Designers and developers will benefit from the comprehensive presentation of the various modules of such systems, while practitioners will find examples of implemented prototypes.
This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Confederated International Conferences: Cooperative Information Systems, CoopIS 2014, and Ontologies, Databases, and Applications of Semantics, ODBASE 2014, held as part of OTM 2014 in October 2014 in Amantea, Italy. The 39 full papers presented together with 12 short papers and 5 keynotes were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 115 submissions. The OTM program covers subjects as follows: process designing and modeling, process enactment, monitoring and quality assessment, managing similarity, software services, improving alignment, collaboration systems and applications, ontology querying methodologies and paradigms, ontology support for web, XML, and RDF data processing and retrieval, knowledge bases querying and retrieval, social network and collaborative methodologies, ontology-assisted event and stream processing, ontology-assisted warehousing approaches, ontology-based data representation, and management in emerging domains.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th Asia-Pacific Conference APWeb 2014 held in Changsha, China, in September 2014. The 34 full papers and 23 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 134 submissions. The papers address research, development and advanced applications of large-scale data management, web and search technologies, and information processing.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 13th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases, SSTD 2013, held in Munich, Germany, in August 2013. The 24 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 58 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on joins and algorithms; mining and discovery; indexing; trajectories and road network data; nearest neighbours queries; uncertainty; and demonstrations.
Object-oriented database management systems (OODBMSs) have generated significant excitement in the database community in the last decade. This interest stems from a real need for data management support for what are called "advanced application areas" that are not well-served by relational technology. The case for object-oriented technology has been made on three fronts. First is the data modeling requirements of the new applications. Some of the more important shortcomings of the relational systems in meeting the requirements of these applications include: 1. Relational systems deal with a single object type: a relation. A relation is used to model different real-world objects, but the semantics of this association is not part of the database. Furthermore, the attributes of a relation may come only from simple and fixed data type domains (numeric, character, and, sometimes, date types). Advanced applications require explicit storage and manipulation of more abstract types (e.g., images, design documents) and the ability for the users to define their own application-specific types. Therefore, a rich type system supporting user defined abstract types is required. 2. The relational model structures data in a relatively simple and flat manner. Non traditional applications require more complex object structures with nested objects (e.g., a vehicle object containing an engine object)."
In todayis competitive and highly dynamic environment, analyzing data to understand how the business is performing, to predict outcomes and trends, and to improve the effectiveness of business processes underlying business operations has become cri- cal. The traditional approach to reporting is no longer adequate, users now demand easy-to-use intelligent platforms and applications capable of analyzing real-time bu- ness data to provide insight and actionable information at the right time. The end goal is to improve the enterprise performance by better and timelier decision making, - abled by the availability of up-to-date, high-quality information. As a response, the notion of "real-time enterprise" has emerged and is beginning to be recognized in the industry. Gartner defines it as "using up-to-date information, getting rid of delays, and using speed for competitive advantage is what the real-time enterprise is all about. . . Indeed, the goal of the real-time enterprise is to act on events as they happen. " Although there has been progress in this direction and many com- nies are introducing products toward making this vision a reality, there is still a long way to go. In particular, the whole lifecycle of business intelligence requires new techniques and methodologies capable of dealing with the new requirements imposed by the real-time enterprise."
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th East European Conference on Advances in Databases and Information Systems, ADBIS 2006. The book presents 29 high-quality papers selected in a rigorous reviewing process. The papers address a wide range of hot research issues and are organized in topical sections on: XML databases and semantic web, web information systems and middleware, query processing and indexing, modelling and design issues, and more.
A summary of research carried out in the CHOROCHRONOS Project, established as an EC-funded Training and Mobility Research Network with the objective of studying the design, implementation, and application of spatio-temporal database management systems. The nine coherent chapters by leading research groups are written in a tutorial style, making the research contributions of the project accessible to a wider audience interested in spatio-temporal information processing. Following an introductory overview, the book presents chapters on ontologies for spatio-temporal databases, conceptual models, spatio-temporal models and languages, access methods and query processing, architectures and implementation of spatio-temporal DBMS, interactive spatio-temporal documents, and future perspectives.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second
International Workshop on Rules in Database Systems, RIDS '95, held
in Athens, Greece, in September 1995.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Algorithmic Aspects of Cloud Computing, ALGOCLOUD 2016, held in Aarhus, Denmark, in August 2016. The 11 revised full papers presented together with one tutorial paper were carefully reviewed and selected from 30 initial submissions. They deal with the following topics: algorithmic aspects of elasticity and scalability for distributed, large-scale data stores (e.g. NoSQL and columnar databases); search and retrieval algorithms for cloud infrastructures; monitoring and analysis of elasticity for virtualized environments; NoSQL, schemaless data modeling, integration; caching and load-balancing; storage structures and indexing for cloud databases; new algorithmic aspects of parallel and distributed computing for cloud applications; scalable machine learning, analytics and data science; high availability, reliability, failover; transactional models and algorithms for cloud databases; query languages and processing programming models; consistency, replication and partitioning CAP, data structures and algorithms for eventually consistent stores.
