R4,635 Discovery Miles 46 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The end of the Soviet period, the vast expansion in the power and influence of capital, and recent developments in social and aesthetic theory, have made the work of Hungarian Marxist philosopher and social critic Georg Lukcs more vital than ever. The very innovations in literary method that, during the 80s and 90s, marginalized him in the West have now made possible new readings of Lukcs, less in thrall to the positions taken by Lukcs himself on political and aesthetic matters. What these developments amount to, this book argues, is an opportunity to liberate Lukcs's thought from its formal and historical limitations, a possibility that was always inherent in Lukcs's own thinking about the paradoxes of form. This collection brings together recent work on Lukcs from the fields of Philosophy, Social and Political Thought, Literary and Cultural Studies. Against the odds, Lukcs's thought has survived: as a critique of late capitalism, as a guide to the contradictions of modernity, and as a model for a temperament that refuses all accommodation with the way things are.

Darwin 1942 - Australia's Darkest Hour (Hardcover): Timothy Hall Darwin 1942 - Australia's Darkest Hour (Hardcover)
Timothy Hall
R4,207 Discovery Miles 42 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

On 19 February 1942 the Japanese air force bombed Darwin. Whilst this fact is well known, very few people know exactly what happened. Timothy Hall was the first writer to be given acess to all the official reports of the time and as a result he has been able to reveal exactly what happened on that dreadful day - a day which Sir Paul Hasluck (17th Governor-General of Australia) later described as 'a day of national shame'. The sequence of events in Darwin that day certainly did not reflect the military honour that the War Cabinet wanted people to believe. On the contrary, for what really happened was a combination of chaos, panic and, in many cases, cowardice on an unprecented scale.

The Globalisation of Higher Education - Developing Internationalised Education Research and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018):... The Globalisation of Higher Education - Developing Internationalised Education Research and Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Timothy Hall, Tonia Gray, Greg Downey, Michael Singh
R4,737 Discovery Miles 47 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book argues that the neoliberal globalisation of higher education faces a need for recalibration. In light of increased concerns from universities in cultivating globalisation, this volume brings together a multi-ethnic and multilingual team of researchers who argue that the continued development of internationalized education now requires new research and practices. As university leaders seek to build the best programs to help students to go abroad, they can face a number of challenges - risk management, negotiating with diverse partners, designing rich experience-based learning and the hopes, fears and limitations of the students themselves. Consequently, the authors argue that changes are particularly important given the current US-centric and UK-centric structural readjustments to globalization policies across all fields of higher education and knowledge production. This multi-perspectival edited collection will appeal to students and scholars of global education, globalization and international education.

Tobruk 1941 - The Desert Siege (Paperback): Timothy Hall Tobruk 1941 - The Desert Siege (Paperback)
Timothy Hall
R1,071 Discovery Miles 10 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, first published in 1984, examines the 1941 siege of Tobruk and the experiences of the inexperienced Australian troops facing Rommel’s successful armies. It looks at the follies as well as the bravery; humane acts from both sides, locked as they were in a brutal battle; the tactics of desert warfare and siege warfare; and the challenges both sides faced from fighting in desert conditions.

Timothy Hall
R4,073 Discovery Miles 40 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on material that had only just been released when this book was originally published in 1981, this book provides a graphic account of the war which, to all intents and purposes, was fought on Australian soil against Australian people - a war which came to the very door of Australia itself. When the Japanese landed at Rabaul on 23 January 1942 it was the start of one of the fiercest campaigns of the war. On that day, with only a handful of badly trained troops, led by inexperienced officers, Australia faced its most serious threat yet. It was to be a campaign with all the ingredients of great drama - cowardice and extraordinary courage, untrained men becoming brave, skilful fighters, torture and unimaginable brutality. On the infamous Kokoda trail, men died in their hundreds, as the Japanese advanced on Port Moresby. And when the Japanese retreated, the advancing Australian troops learnt just how brutal the fighting had been.

The Fall of Singapore 1942 (Paperback): Timothy Hall The Fall of Singapore 1942 (Paperback)
Timothy Hall
R1,241 Discovery Miles 12 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Singapore fell to the Japanese on 15 September 1942, but in 1941 Europeans on the island felt still untouched by war, lulled into security by the belief that Singapore was impregnable from the sea. However, the Planning Chief of Imperial Army Headquarters in Tokyo had realised a successful invasion could come from the north, down the Malay peninsula... Requests from less naive members of the allied forces for more men, arms and equipment were not filled. Authorities were unwilling to reveal to the civilian population the true situation. And so through accident or miscalculation, Singapore was totally unable to repel the Japanese attack. This accessible book, illustrated with black and white photos charts the course of these events.

Timothy Hall, John J Sbrega
R20,199 Discovery Miles 201 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 4 volumes in this set, originally published between 1980 and 1983, bring to light and focus on the conflict between Japan and Australia and Japan and the USA. Timothy Hall's volumes, richly illustrated with black & white photographs, used highly contentious documents as their sources and give fascinating insights into a period of Australian history which is sometimes less than gloious. John J. Sbrega's tour de force is not only one of the most extensive annotated bibliographies on the USA and Japan in World War 2 ever published, but it also provides invaluable information on lesser known but no less important aspects of the conflict.

Mesmeric Experiences (Paperback): Spencer Timothy Hall Mesmeric Experiences (Paperback)
Spencer Timothy Hall
R693 Discovery Miles 6 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Spencer Timothy Hall (1812 1885) was a writer and practitioner of mesmerism. He grew up in rural Nottinghamshire, apprenticed himself to a printer, and in 1836 he started his own printing business. He later became co-editor of the Sheffield newspaper The Iris, and published several books describing the countryside. After watching a demonstration of mesmerism in 1841 Hall became a practitioner himself, demonstrating mesmerism throughout Britain and offering treatment. His most famous patient was Harriet Martineau, who became an enthusiastic supporter of the technique. This book, first published in 1845, describes Hall's first encounter with mesmerism and explains his decision to become a mesmerist. He discusses thirty-four cases in which mesmerism apparently cured medical problems and describes the treatment he gave to Harriet Martineau. This fascinating book provides valuable insights into both the practice and theory of mesmerism in the early Victorian period.
