The atomic age began at 5:30 a.m. on July 16, 1945, with the
explosion of “the Gadget†at Trinity near Alamogordo, New
Mexico. Prelude to the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which
forced the capitulation of Japan and ended World War II, the
Trinity test was the culmination of herculean efforts by
scientists, civilians, and the military of the United States to tap
the potential of the atom for a wartime emergency. If Nazi Germany
could engineer the bomb first, an Allied victory against Hitler was
all but lost. Historic Photos of the Manhattan
Project is a look back at the epic struggle to build the
world’s first atomic bomb. Nearly 200 images in vivid
black-and-white reveal the project as it unfolded, from its
secretive origins at Oak Ridge, Hanford, and Los Alamos, to the day
Americans celebrated triumph over the Axis powers with victory over
Japan. A pinnacle moment in the history of the United States, the
Manhattan Project’s application of Einstein’s famous equation
E=MC2Â shows, perhaps better than any other single endeavor,
what can be achieved by human ingenuity when the citizens of a
great nation are united in freedom against a fearsome and despotic
foe.
Taking an application-oriented approach, these exercises encourage
students to apply rigorous analyses to collected data, and provide
results through formal professional reports. The book contains
nearly three dozen exercises covering workplace environment, work
analysis, information processing, physiological issues, and systems
evaluations. Some are pencil and paper exercises, some are
stopwatch studies, some require special laboratory equipment, and
others are field exercises. The book gives technical background on
each topic and provides equipment needs, experimental design, and
data sheets, as well as guidance on analysis and detailed
instructions on report writing.

Rationality: Contexts and Constraints is an interdisciplinary
reappraisal of the nature of rationality. In method, it is
pluralistic, drawing upon the analytic approaches of philosophy,
linguistics, neuroscience, and more. These methods guide
exploration of the intersection between traditional scholarship and
cutting-edge philosophical or scientific research. In this way, the
book contributes to development of a suitably revised,
comprehensive understanding of rationality, one that befits the
21st century, one that is adequately informed by recent
investigations of science, pathology, non-human thought, emotion,
and even enigmatic Chinese texts that might previously have seemed
to be expressions of irrationalism.

Mississippi, the late 1950s. After the death of his father,
eleven-year-old Jory Sheppard runs away from an unwanted life in
foster care. Trying to make it on his own, he is caught in a
violent storm on the Mississippi River, but when he is rescued from
the raging waters by an old black man named Moses, it becomes the
event that will change his life. Taken into Moses' family as one of
their own, Jory is introduced to a world so familiar and yet so
very different from the one he once knew. As he learns and grows
under the benevolent care of his new family, he struggles to make
sense of the society in which he lives-a society that would spit on
a man such as Moses simply because his skin is black, and make
every effort to rip Jory from the family he loves. Quickly
entrenched in a struggle that is much bigger than himself, Jory
must learn the difference between what feels necessary and what is
right, what pity is, and what hate is. If he wants to fight the
injustice and uncertainty that surrounds him, he must learn what it
really means to stand up for what he believes in.
