The Indispensable University - Higher Education, Economic Development, and the Knowledge Economy (Hardcover): Eugene P Trani,... The Indispensable University - Higher Education, Economic Development, and the Knowledge Economy (Hardcover)
Eugene P Trani, Robert D. Holsworth; Foreword by Timothy M. Kaine
R2,701 Discovery Miles 27 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Indispensable University describes the innovative transformation of institutions of higher education (HEIs) across the world, in response to the emerging realities of the twenty-first century global knowledge-based economy, as well as describes how HEIs are defining many of today's economic realities on a regional level. HEIs continue to drive economic development through their traditional roles of purchaser, employer, real estate developer, workforce developer and community developer. But these roles now must be executed more strategically and collaboratively. Also, the twenty-first century economy offers universities unique opportunities to generate the intellectual and financial capital that drives emerging knowledge-based industries. Case studies are drawn from: urban America; rural America; Europe; the Middle East; and emerging countries. Some of the topics covered include the following: the role of university presidents as change leaders; the relationship between higher education institutions and the political leadership of cities, states, and nations; successful models of partnerships between higher education and the private sector; and future challenges and opportunities facing the modern university.

Bellwether - Virginia's Political Transformation, 2006-2020 (Paperback): David J Toscano Bellwether - Virginia's Political Transformation, 2006-2020 (Paperback)
David J Toscano; Foreword by Timothy M. Kaine
R882 Discovery Miles 8 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Throughout the early years of the 20th century, Virginia was viewed as a Republican state. Citizens in the Commonwealth had not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964. In 2000, the GOP had just won the governor's race, held both U.S. Senate seats, and had majorities in both the House of Delegates and the State Senate. By 2020, all of that had been reversed. During that period, Democrats won four of five governors contests, elected two US senators, and voted for Democratic presidential candidates in every year since 2008. In 2019, the House of Delegates, where Republicans maintained a 68-32 supermajority in 2011, flipped to Democratic control. With it, the state became a Democratic trifecta, where the party controlled all of the state's levers of power. Bellwether tells the story of how this happened from someone who was "in the room at the time." David Toscano began his service in the House in 2006 and became the Democratic Leader of the body in 2011. He examines the special nature of Virginia politics, the demographic changes that underpin much of its shifting political fortunes, and the policies and personalities at the center of the state's dynamics for the last two decades.
