Contesting Hidden Waters - Conflict Resolution for Groundwater and Aquifers (Hardcover): W. Todd Jarvis Contesting Hidden Waters - Conflict Resolution for Groundwater and Aquifers (Hardcover)
W. Todd Jarvis
R4,132 Discovery Miles 41 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The world increasingly relies on groundwater resources for drinking water and the provision of food for a growing population. The utilization of aquifer systems also extends beyond freshwater supply to include other resources such as heat extraction and the storage and disposal of substances.

Unlike other books about conflict resolution and negotiations over water resources, this volume is unique in focusing exclusively on conflicts over groundwater and aquifers. The author explores the specific challenges presented by these "hidden" resources, which are shown to be very different from those posed by surface water resources. Whereas surface watersheds are static, groundwater boundaries are value-laden and constantly changing during development.

The book describes the various issues surrounding the governance and management of these resources and the various parties involved in conflicts and negotiations over them. Through first-hand accounts from a pracademic skilled in both process and substance as a groundwater professional and professional mediator, the book offers options for addressing the challenges and issues through a transdisciplinary approach.

Collective Aquifer Governance - Dispute Prevention for Groundwater and Aquifers through Unitization (Hardcover): Todd Jarvis,... Collective Aquifer Governance - Dispute Prevention for Groundwater and Aquifers through Unitization (Hardcover)
Todd Jarvis, Jakob Wiley
R3,538 Discovery Miles 35 380 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Current models of groundwater governance focus principally on the allocation of water, rather than taking a holistic approach incorporating valuable storage space in the aquifer, as well as the transformative changes in managed recharge of manufactured water, storm water, and carbon. Effective implementation of a more modern approach now calls for rethink of both scale and jurisdictional boundaries. This involves linking public and private aspects of water quantity, water quality, geothermal regulation, property rights, subsurface storage rights, water marketing, water banking, legal jurisdictions, and other components into a single governance document. This style of agreement stands in contrast to the siloed approach currently applied to aquifer resources. Using case studies, and an activity inspired by gaming concepts to explore the incentives, and challenges to aquifer governance approaches, this book demonstrates how application of the principles of unitization agreements to aquifers could provide a new approach to aquifer governance models.
