In Codeine Diary, award-winning poet Tom Andrews gives a riveting
and often hilarious account of living fully under the shadow of
hemophilia. Codeine Diary is a lyrical and haunting memoir of one
man's refusal to succumb to the constraints of his disease. Andrews
learned early that ordinary life is a perpetual, fragile miracle,
which drove him to race motorcycles and play in a punk band as a
teenager - pursuits most hemophiliacs would regard as foolhardy at
best. But while Andrews was "a poster child for bad insurance
risks", he was considered the healthy one in his family: his
brother suffered from a devastating and ultimately fatal kidney
disorder. In fact, the two diseases were eerily symmetrical: there
were days when Andrews would suffer a bleed while his brother's
blood would not stop coagulating. Having acquired hemophilia
through a "spontaneous mutation" and not hereditarily, having
avoided HIV, which nine out of ten severe hemophiliacs contracted
in the early 1980s, Andrews is living proof of the strange role
chance plays in our lives.

[His] poems . . . bear witness to both the care and disregard
around us--naming the places, catching the shine of the ordinary,
pulling the rug out from under vanity and pretension, giving fresh
credit to the selfless and decent, acknowledging the inevitable,
nudging us toward observant lives and peaceful
interactions.--Jurors, Western Book Awards Lifetime Achievement in
Poetry, 1992 The late William Stafford's poetry and essays have had
a major influence on contemporary American poetry. Since his book
Traveling Through the Dark won the National Book Award in 1963, his
awards have grown exponentially as new work has appeared. The range
of writers in the past four decades who have celebrated Stafford's
work-- from Margaret Atwood to James Dickey-- is remarkable. On
William Stafford: The Worth of Local Things helps clarify the
precise nature of Stafford's influence by assembling the responses
of some of our best poets and critics to his work, including
Richard Hugo, Charles Simic, Louis Simpson, Robert Coles, Linda
Pastan, and Robert Creeley. This collection offers a unique view of
Stafford's sometimes controversial work and insight into several of
the liveliest recent debates in poetics. Tom Andrews is Assistant
Professor of English, Ohio University.
In this second wise and passionate book, Tom Andrews explores
illness as a major theme, avoiding sentimentality without being
merely confessional. He advances his considerable talent with great
strength and forcefulness. The poems ae buoyant with humor and
mindful of larger mysteries even as they investigate very personal
issues. There is an urgency that is compelling; the work is
immersed in the private grief of the speaker without excluding the
reader. There is real and hard-won wisdom and intelligence in the
poems, offering genuine surprises and delight; their attractive
humility is not a pose.
