Public Policy Circulation - Arenas, Agents and Actions (Hardcover): Tom Baker, Christopher Walker Public Policy Circulation - Arenas, Agents and Actions (Hardcover)
Tom Baker, Christopher Walker
R3,006 Discovery Miles 30 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Policy making is more globally connected today than ever before. Policy ideas, experiences and expertise circulate rapidly over great distances. But who is involved in distributing policy, how do they do it, and through which arenas? This book examines the work involved in policy circulation, and as the first genuinely transdisciplinary collection on policy circulation, it offers an insight into the globally dispersed yet interconnected nature of contemporary policy making and the transdisciplinary future of policy circulation studies. Bringing together international scholars and multidisciplinary perspectives, this book showcases theoretical approaches from across the social sciences, and offers empirical perspectives from around the world. Synthesizing related literatures on policy transfer, diffusion and mobility, and assessing their differences and commonalities, this book proposes ways to foster transdisciplinary dialogue. Including a range of case studies, from both the Global North and South, Public Policy Circulation provides a succinct understanding and critique of the Global policy transfer, diffusion and mobility through the lens of arenas, agents and actions. This book will be a vital tool for academics and students of political science, public policy, public administration, international relations, geography, urban studies, sociology and anthropology alike, with its up-to-date coverage of contemporary policy circulation, and developments in the theory of global policy movement and adoption. It will also be of interest to practitioners in government agencies and NGOs, providing insight into their increasing role in both the national and international transfer and dispersal of policies. Contributors include: T. Baker, M.I. Dussauge-Laguna, R. Jolkkonen, O. Loeblova, P. McGuirk, S. Montero, M. Morais de Sa e Silva, A. Rusu, T. Soremi, J. Spence, C. Walker, A. Wood

Twenty-seven-year-old Tim Halladay is a rising star in the three-martini lunch world of Madison Avenue in the early 1970s. In only five years, Tim has become a vice-president at the first ad agency he interviewed with, in charge of some of the most prestigious accounts listed in Advertising Age.

But a week before Thanksgiving, his life takes a serious hit. After a hard-drinking, sex-filled night, Tim, the "golden boy," arrives late to work. He suddenly finds himself fired without explanation. With three hundred dollars in his savings account, Tim wonders how he'll even pay the rent.

As Tim comes to terms with his unemployment, he reminisces about his life and the circumstances that have brought him to this crucial crossroads. Everything in his life-his emotionally unstable upbringing, his service in the army during the troubled years of the Vietnam War, his affair with a high school girlfriend, his experiences at William and Mary during the JFK and LBJ years, his relocation to Manhattan in the 1970s, his first job in the world of advertising, and his adventures as a closeted gay man in the Stonewall Era Greenwich Village-contributed to both the downfall and redemption of Tim Halladay.

"Modest, gem-like, and oddly affecting, the sixteen quite short stories of Full Frontal present intimate moments of one gay man's not untypical life in the late twentieth century. And, like a bracelet or necklace of quirky, individual charms, they ultimately add up to the kind of surprising cumulative effect one usually only gets from knowing someone well for a long time."

-Felice Picano

It is August of 1957, and Tim Halladay, a caddie at the Long Shore Country Club, is looking forward to beginning eighth grade at Assumption School. Tim and his best friend and fellow caddie, Jimmy, are oblivious to the fact that they are slowly transforming into young men with secret desires.

As Tim embarks on a journey of emotional and sexual development, he approaches the world around him with a "full frontal" attitude that allows him to somehow not only survive but thrive, beginning with his first gay experiences as a shy teenager in suburban Connecticut and moving through his escapades at a Virginia army base, the Hotel Manhattan, the Museum of Modern Art, the Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel, and lavish suites at various upscale hotels and resorts. As Tim moves from one encounter to the next, he gradually transforms, moving toward a future as a rising star.

"Full Frontal" shares an intriguing glimpse into the life of a gay man, as told through his eclectic relationships as he eventually discovers that true happiness is all about give and take.

When Robert kicks his sister's beloved piggy bank, Trevor, out of the window he sets in motion a chain of events that results in the unexpected demise of a local fishmonger. Having developed a taste for blood and sick to death of sneering, imbecilic adults, Robert sets about becoming the real murderer he has always dreamed of being, all the while egged on by the newly-talking Trevor. Meanwhile, in the mind-numbingly boring offices of local paper The Kent Clarion, work experience student Philip Bottering wishes for something, anything to report on - preferably a juicy disaster. Based on the novel by Doctor Who's Tom Baker, this madly-hilarious, frenetic scream of a show, which includes shark-mauling beach-goers, burning vicars and even waltzing rats, is a multi-rolling masterpiece that tells the gloriously grisly tale of one scoundrel's attempt at infamy.

R701 Discovery Miles 7 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Orville E. Dickerhoof was born before the Wright brothers flew their first airplane and lived to see a man walk on the moon. His own adventures began when he bought a Curtiss Jenny biplane in 1922 and restored it to flying condition. He barnstormed around the midwest in a variety of airplanes, offering rides and participating in aerial circus acts. When he wasn't flying, he worked on the railroad. During his aviation years, he survived a number of mishaps and crashes, and became acquainted with some of the most famous fliers of aviation's Golden Age. In his 90s, at the end of a full life, and still retaining a sharp memory, Dickerhoof related his memoirs to Tom Baker, who wrote them down and added some historical context to create this book. Photographs and letters from Dickerhoof's scrapbook help to illuminate life in rural and small-town America during the time when great locomotives thundered across the prairies and the first airplanes took to the sky.

This set contains three stories: 11.3 The Dreams of Avarice by Guy Adams (4 parts). The Nine isn't your average robber. A ferociously intelligent and murderous kleptomaniac Time Lord with regenerative dissonance, he's a far more dangerous adversary than most security details are used to. So it's useful that that Doctor is on hand to stop him. This time more than ever - as the Nine is about to pull off the greatest heist of his criminal career. Though could the consequences be far worse than the crime? 11.4 Shellshock by Simon Barnard and Paul Morris (4 parts). When the TARDIS lands behind German lines at the height of the First World War the Doctor finds himself inadvertently transported to a hospital full of traumatised soldiers. They're suffering from shellshock but also something else. Something causing vivid nightmares that chill the blood. Something not of this place. Things are not quiet on the Western Front. 11.5 Peake Season by Lizbeth Myles (2 parts). After an embarrassing encounter, the Doctor tries to make amends to Mervyn Peake by offering him a trip in the TARDIS. It's a trip the famous author should never have accepted. Soon he and the Doctor find themselves trapped in a nameless city and working as newspaper cartoonists. Where are they? More importantly, where is the TARDIS? And more importantly than that - can they escape with their lives? These stories include the short and shivery legend, "The Vanishing Hitchhiker;" the macabre comedy, "The Hook;" and the scream-till-you-drop terror tale, "Bloody Mary." Charles Dickens' story of solitary miser Ebenezer Scrooge, who is taught the true meaning of Christmas by the three ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, has become one of the timeless classics of English literature. First published in 1843, it introduces us not only to Scrooge himself, but also to the memorable characters of underpaid desk clerk Bob Cratchit and his poor family, the poorest amongst whom is the ailing and crippled Tiny Tim.
