Railway Memories the Trials and the Triumph - A B.R. Motive Power Engineer's Experience of the Steam to Diesel Years... Railway Memories the Trials and the Triumph - A B.R. Motive Power Engineer's Experience of the Steam to Diesel Years (Paperback)
Tom Greaves; Edited by Steve Chapman
R457 Discovery Miles 4 570 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Tom Greaves gives his own account of the chaotic introduction of main line diesel locomotives during the late 1950s which was conducted primarily on the suburban network out of London's King's Cross station and with which he was directly involved. There, a multitude of untried and disparate locomotive types were launched into intensive commuter service almost overnight with inevitable consequences but out of which ultimately emerged a modern, cleaner and more cost-effective network. Railway Memories No.26 also outlines the array of measures taken in the 1950s to prolong the life of steam and make it more efficient before the diesels finally took over. The author charts his early years as a premium apprentice at Doncaster Works and takes us through his time as a locomotive shed master in the London area and as traction engineer at Sheffield and Leeds in the 1960s, concluding with a selection of amusing and fascinating anecdotes. A keen and accomplished photographer throughout his career, Tom Greaves also provides a treasure chest of rare steam and early diesel photographs.

Starting with Heidegger (Paperback): Tom Greaves Starting with Heidegger (Paperback)
Tom Greaves
R958 Discovery Miles 9 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a new introduction to Heidegger, guiding the student through the overall development of his ideas. Covering all the key concepts of Heidegger's work, "Starting with Heidegger" provides an accessible introduction to the ideas that are embodied in his magnum opus, "Being and Time". Thematically structured, the book encourages the reader to engage with Heidegger's thought, leading him or her to a more thorough understanding of the roots of his philosophical concerns. Drawing on a wide range of Heidegger's lectures and manuscripts, the book shows how Heidegger came to arrive at the existential analysis of "Being and Time" and how he continued to develop insights into the problems which motivated it. Crucially, contextual detail and intellectual influences, from Husserl to Nietzsche, are introduced with an eye to uncovering the basic motivations behind Heidegger's complex formulations, elucidating not only what Heidegger wrote, but how he thought philosophy should be practised. This is the ideal introduction for anyone coming to the work of this challenging thinker for the first time.

Vicos and Beyond - A Half Century of Applying Anthropology in Peru (Hardcover): Tom Greaves, Ralph Bolton, Florencia Zapata Vicos and Beyond - A Half Century of Applying Anthropology in Peru (Hardcover)
Tom Greaves, Ralph Bolton, Florencia Zapata; Contributions by Clifford Barnett, Paul L. Doughty, …
R3,836 Discovery Miles 38 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1952, Professor Allan Holmberg arranged for Cornell University to lease the Hacienda Vicos, an agricultural estate in the central Peruvian highlands on which some 1800 Quechua-speaking highland peasants resided. Between 1952 and 1957 Holmberg, with colleagues and students, initiated a set of social, economic, and agrarian changes, and nurtured mechanisms for community-based management of the estate by the resident peasants. By the end of a second lease in 1962, sufficient political pressure had been brought to bear on a reluctant national government to force the sale of Vicos to its people. Holmberg's twin goals for the Vicos Project were to bring about community possession of their land base and to study the process as it unfolded, advancing anthropological understanding of cultural change. To describe the process of doing both, he invented the term "participant intervention." Despite the large corpus of existing Vicos publications, this book contains much information that here reaches print for the first time. The chapter authors do not entirely agree on various key points regarding the nature of the Vicos Project, the intentions of project personnel and community actors, and what interpretive framework is most valid; in part, these disagreements reflect the relevance and importance of the Vicos Project to contemporary applied anthropologists and the contrasting ways in which any historical event can be explained. Some chapters contrast Vicos with other projects in the southern Andean highlands; others examine new developments at Vicos itself. The conclusion suggests how those changes should be understood, within Andean anthropology and within anthropology more generally.

Endangered Peoples of North America - Struggles to Survive and Thrive (Hardcover, New): Tom Greaves Endangered Peoples of North America - Struggles to Survive and Thrive (Hardcover, New)
Tom Greaves
R2,087 Discovery Miles 20 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Bringing a fresh perspective to multicultural studies, Greaves illuminates the current situation of 13 of our most traditional peoples in the United States and Canada. Included are small tribal groups, ethnic groups with a unique way of life, new immigrants, and refugees with strong roots in war-torn homelands. A broad diversity of cultures is presented, including the Lummi in Washington State, the African Americans in the coastal zone of Georgia, the Amish of Lancaster County, and the Hmong in Wisconsin. The relevant issues of their survival in today's global culture will engage students and general readers alike.

Each chapter covers a specific group, including sections on the land, people, traditional subsistence strategies, political and social organization, religion and worldview, threats to survival, and response to those threats. A common format to each chapter facilitates comparisons between cases. A Food for Thought section has questions for discussion or paper topics, and a helpful Resource Guide lists further reading, films and videos, websites, and organizations. Maps and photos complement the text.
