In this thoroughly revised and updated second edition, the authors add new features aimed at making this fascinating subject even more accessible for students, practitioners and law teachers alike. It employs a "Comprehension and analysis: test yourself" tool at the beginning of each chapter, as well as recommending "Five key readings" and "Five key cases" in each chapter, thus engaging other great scholarship and material in this rapidly developing field. Constitutional Law: Texts, Cases and Materials, Second Edition, includes wholly new chapters on the historical background to the Constitution, the political structure of government, the judicial power in the context of the political arms of government, and standards of review. It covers all significant constitutional developments up to April 2019. This second edition is comprised of three thematic parts. The first part looks at the Irish constitutional order in a broader historical, theoretical and comparative context. The second part looks at "Institutions and the separation of powers." The third part addresses rights in Irish constitutional law. As well as introducing key principles and themes, this casebook offers a great deal of critical insight and analysis. In doing so, it recognises that constitutional law is not just a body of abstract rules interpreted and applied by the courts. Instead, constitutional law is placed in its historical, intellectual and social context and presented as an ongoing attempt to determine the values that ought to inform governance in Ireland. The important role of the courts in this process is recognised by the central space given to extracts from all the leading constitutional law cases.
This volume brings together academics and judges to consider ideas and arguments flowing from the often complex relationships between law and politics, adjudication and policy-making, and the judicial and political branches of government. Contributors explore numerous themes, including the nature and extent of judicial power, the European Court of Human Rights decision in O'Keeffe v Ireland, the process of appointing judges and judicial representation, judicial power and political processes. Contrasting judicial and academic perspectives are provided on the role of the European Court of Human Rights and the nature of exhausting domestic remedies, including a contribution from the late Mr. Justice Adrian Hardiman. The role of specific judges, social and political disputes and case law are examined and socio-economic rights, the rule of law and electoral processes are all addressed. -- .

The political theory of the Irish Constitution considers Irish constitutional law and the Irish constitutional tradition from the perspective of Republican theory. It analyses the central devices and doctrines of the Irish Constitution - popular sovereignty, constitutional rights and judicial review - in light of Republican concepts of citizenship and civic virtue. The Constitution, it will argue, can be understood as a framework for promoting popular participation in government as much as a mechanism for protecting individual liberties. It will be of interest to students and researchers in Irish politics, political theory and constitutional law, and to all those interested in political reform and public philosophy in Ireland. -- .
This accessible yet authoritative collection of essays chronicles the history of dissent in the British Isles, from Magna Carta to the present day. The contributors - all specialists in their field - cover such milestones as the age of revolution, industrialisation and the foundation of the Labour Party. Tony Benn contributes a powerful, final extended chapter arguing that "we are light years away from being a true democracy."
Current issues in the public health arena have challenged the system to broaden its traditional focus on infectious disease to include chronic disease as well. As this change in emphasis takes place, professionals must be prepared to address the special chronic health concerns of older people living in the community. This textbook meets the training needs of those professionals. Public Health and Aging examines the role of public health in the planning, coordination, and delivery of health promotion and disease prevention services to older people living outside of institutional settings. Here, experts in the areas of health care policy and care of aged persons analyze the scientific basis for the practice of public health in an increasingly aging society. Reviewing a wide range of the social, cultural, financial, and environmental factors that influence the health experiences of older population groups, the authors delve into the epidemiology of age-related chronic illnesses, program development, methodological issues, data collection and analysis, strategies for intervention, and ethics. From outlines for community-based program planning and development to discussions about the future challenges for health care systems and services, this book is an ideal reference for gerontology, public policy, and public health professionals and professionals in training. "Pulling together experts with diverse backgrounds in public health and aging, Public Health and Aging is the first book in nearly ten years to take such a comprehensive public health approach to the evaluation of care for the aging members of our society. The book is a 'who's who' in the field and promises to be a classic textbook in the areas of aging and public health."--Marcia Ory, Ph.D., Chief of the Social Science Research on Aging program at the National Institute on Aging
