Ben Jonson in the Romantic Age (Hardcover, New): Tom Lockwood Ben Jonson in the Romantic Age (Hardcover, New)
Tom Lockwood
R4,652 Discovery Miles 46 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tom Lockwood's study is the first examination of Jonson's place in the texts and culture of the Romantic age. Part one of the book explores theatrical, critical, and editorial responses to Jonson, including his place in the post-Garrick theatre, critical estimations of his life and work, and the politically charged making and reception of William Gifford's 1816 edition of Jonson's Works. Part two explores allusive and imitative responses to Jonson's poetry and plays in the writings of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and explores how Jonson serves variously as a model by which to measure the poet laureate, Robert Southey, and Coleridge's eldest son, Hartley. The introduction and conclusion locate this "Romantic Jonson" against his eighteenth-century and Victorian re-creations. Ben Jonson in the Romantic Age shows us a varied, mobile, and contested Jonson and offers a fresh perspective on the Romantic age.

Chaplains in Early Modern England - Patronage, Literature and Religion (Hardcover, New): Hugh Adlington, Tom Lockwood, Gillian... Chaplains in Early Modern England - Patronage, Literature and Religion (Hardcover, New)
Hugh Adlington, Tom Lockwood, Gillian Wright
R2,490 Discovery Miles 24 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Who were early modern chaplains and what did they do? Chaplains are well known to have been pivotal figures within early modern England, their activities ranging from more conventionally religious roles (conducting church services, offering spiritual advice and instruction) to a surprisingly wide array of literary functions (writing poetry, or acting as scribes and editors). Chaplains in early modern England: Patronage, literature and religion explores the important, but often neglected, contributions made by chaplains of different kinds - royal, episcopal, noble, gentry, diplomatic - to early modern English culture. Addressing a period from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth centuries, it focuses on chaplains from the Church of England, examining their roles in church and politics, and within both domestic and cultural life. It also shows how understanding the significance of chaplains can illuminate wider cultural practices - patronage, religious life and institutions, and literary production - in the early modern period. -- .

The Merchant of Venice (Paperback, Updated edition): William Shakespeare The Merchant of Venice (Paperback, Updated edition)
William Shakespeare; Edited by M. M. Mahood; Introduction by Tom Lockwood
R343 Discovery Miles 3 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For this updated edition of one of Shakespeare's most problematic plays, Tom Lockwood has added a new introductory section on the latest scholarly trends, performance and adaptation practices which have occurred over the last two decades. Investigating the latest critical frames through which the play has been interpreted, the updated introduction also focuses on recent international performances on stage and screen (including Al Pacino's performances on film and in Daniel Sullivan's production in New York, the Habima National Theatre's production for the Globe to Globe Festival, Jonathan Munby's touring production for the Globe performed in London, New York and Venice, and Rupert Goold's production for the Royal Shakespeare Company). Finally, new forms of adaptation are considered: a performance transposed to the different generic mode of a New York auction room, and the remaking of the play in Howard Jacobson's 2016 novel, Shylock Is my Name.

Arden of Faversham (Paperback, Revised - Revised edition): Martin White, Tom Lockwood Arden of Faversham (Paperback, Revised - Revised edition)
Martin White, Tom Lockwood; Volume editing by Martin White; Introduction by Tom Lockwood
R350 Discovery Miles 3 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This 'lamentable and true tragedy', as it is announced on its title page, dramatises a domestic murder of the sort that nowadays scandalises and thrills the readers of tabloid newspapers. Although the title advertises 'the great malice and dissimulation of a wicked woman' and her 'unsatiable desire of filthie lust', the unknown playwright with great dramatic skill and psychological insight manages to balance the motivations of all the main characters. Thomas Arden, one of the rapacious landlords so reviled in mid-Elizabethan social drama, was murdered at his own house in Faversham, Kent, in 1551. His murderers, it turned out, had been hired by his wife Alice, thrall to Mosby, who hoped to rise socially by marrying a rich widow. As the introduction to this edition shows, sexual and material covetousness is the central theme running through the play, which is commonly rated 'unquestionably the best of all Elizabethan domestic tragedies'.
