The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent
US-led invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003 profoundly
affected all aspects of society, including cinema. Or did they?
Even now, years after those horrific events, debate still rages
over their impact on films. At the time many expected Hollywood to
tamp down graphic movie violence, while others hoped that
filmmakers would finally lay bare volatile socio-political issues
fuelling terrorist attacks. In fact, what has emerged is a thicket
of darkly pessimistic genres including thrillers, combat films,
sci-fi, and horror that makes pre-9/11 films appear naive and
optimistic. Hollywood 9/11 explores this transformation, critically
examining everything from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to
The Hurt Locker and placing the films in the context of both the
socio-political scene and the history of cinema.

events in U.S. history, transforming and putting a distinctive
stamp on an entire era of film history. This book explores this

everything from "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" to "The
Hurt Locker" and putting them in context with the sociopolitical
scene and the history of cinema and film making."
"Sex and Violence" examines the history and social dynamics of film
censorship in the United States. It examines censorship
controversies throughout film history, from the beginning of cinema
in the 1890s to the present. The book focuses both on formal
censorship systems, including state and local censorship boards and
industry self-regulation efforts, to unofficial censorship rendered
by pressure groups and powerful social movements. It probes beneath
the official rhetoric and explanations, revealing sensitive,
festering controversies. The book critically examines dozens of
Hollywood s most controversial (and interesting) movies, focusing
on recurring issues and censorship themes. The book reveals the
social and political processes of vetting films and their effect on
film form and content. In addition, it examines the use of
sexuality and violence in movies and the effects of movie
censorship on those issues. Finally, it analyzes and makes
recommendations for dramatic changes in motion picture ratings."

Vampire characters are ubiquitous in popular culture, serving as
metaphors for society's most sensitive subjects-sexuality, gender
roles, race, ethnicity, class-and often channeling widespread fears
of immigration, crime, terrorism and addiction. This book explores
pop culture's vampires variously as sexual seducers, savage
monsters, noble protectors and drainers of human power. The author
discusses three real-life role models for vampire characters.
Sadomasochism, Popular Culture and Revolt: A Pornography of
Violence explores powerful connections between violent pornography
and current gender wars, generational conflicts, political
struggles, and racial and ethnic unrest. Long before these
conflicts dominated headlines worldwide, they become embedded and
contextualized in popular culture. Tracing the history of today's
popular porn genres, including torture porn, revenge porn, war
porn, and fascist porn, Tom Pollard reveals a "sadomasochistic
trope" of fictional and real sexual violence and sexual justice
that had largely remained hidden and suppressed. Today it has
exploded into public awareness by mass movements like #MeToo
demanding justice for sexual assault victims. This movement joins
other recent social movements, including Black Lives Matter and
advocates of safety from gun violence, which, along with #MeToo,
constitute a "revolt of submissives" no longer willing to endure
unwanted violence. This thoughtful examination of the history and
content of violent pornography reveals portentous patterns and
developing trends. By examining pornography's violent content,
Pollard forces us to confront wider social and cultural violence.
Sadomasochism, Popular Culture and Revolt will be of great interest
to scholars of gay and lesbian studies and queer studies, while
being a vital text for undergraduate and graduate instructors of
social movement studies in sociology, political science, American
Studies, and history.
