1791 and the Doctor and Rose get to meet one of the most enigmatic, thrilling and important people in history: The Chevalier d’Eon. Billie Piper, famed British actor of stage and screen, and companion Rose Tyler, reprises the role for the first time since her departure in the tear-jerking Journey's End Doctor Who story on BBC1. Godly Clergy in Early Stuart England - The Caroline Puritan Movement, c.1620-1643 (Hardcover, New): Tom Webster Godly Clergy in Early Stuart England - The Caroline Puritan Movement, c.1620-1643 (Hardcover, New)
Tom Webster
R2,932 Discovery Miles 29 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The existence of an early Stuart Puritan movement is reconsidered in this book. It examines the ways in which Puritan clergymen encouraged greater sociability with their like-minded colleagues, both in theory and in practice, to such an extent that they came to define themselves as a peculiar people, a community distinct from their less faithful rivals. These voluntary communal rituals encouraged a view of the world divided between us and them. This provides a context for a renewed examination of the thinking behind debates on ceremonial nonconformity and reactions to the Laudian changes of the 1630s. From this the book presents a fresh perspective on arguments about emigration and church government, arguments that proved crucial to Parliamentarian unity during the English Civil War.

Tom Webster, Kenneth Shipps
R1,663 Discovery Miles 16 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rogers's diary offers a direct and personal expression of the meaning of English Puritanism on the eve of the civil war. Samuel Rogers began his diary just before his twenty-first birthday. He was a godly minister from godly stock - his grandfather, father and uncle were all part of the Puritan Movement - and his diary begins as Samuel finishes hiseducation at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Samuel expresses his intense loneliness as chaplain to the unsatisfactory Dennys of Bishops Stortford, and his efforts to obtain comfort from the nearby godly community - including visitsto Wethersfield, where his father was lecturer. His isolation eases, and his diary ends, shortly after he is appointed chaplain to the family of Lady Mary de Vere, whose contacts with prominent members of the godly he details in his pages. The diary's unrivalled view, from a day-to-day puritan perspective, of what the 1630s were like for a godly minister 'in the battlefield' makes it a valuable record. For Rogers, everything is of religious relevance: in addition to the social detail of the diary there is also a real and persuasive revelation of the spiritual meaning of Puritanism.

And this time his meddling may have gone too far. 4.2 The Tyrants of Logic by Marc Platt. he Doctor and Jo land on Port Anvil –a bleak, abandoned mining colony on the remote planet Burnt Salt. A huge armoured crate has recently arrived in the almost derelict Spacehub. No-one knows who it’s for. No-one knows what it contains. Strange creatures lurk around the outskirts, and a rag-tag population of misfits inhabit what is left of the town: a saloon bar owner, a literal one-man band and a hunter of very unusual prey. If they want to survive the night, they’re going to have to work together. Because the Cybermen want the contents of the crate. And they will stop at nothing to get hold of it. Director Nicholas Briggs is one of the Big Finish executive producers, and is also well known for his role on TV's Doctor Who voicing the Daleks and other monsters. This volume includes the return of two fan favourites - renegade Time Lord The Meddling Monk (played by comedian Rufus Hound) and the Cybermen: this is the first time the Cybermen have confronted the Doctor in a full-cast adventure, and has been long-awaited ever since the Third Doctor Adventures range was announced.
