Such questions concern the role of the cantatas in Bach's
compositional development, musical models for the works, and
performance practice during the composer's lifetime. In this book,
Bach scholars place the works in their historical and biographical
context, guiding the reader through their literary, musical,
aesthetic and theological features. This volume--the first of three
which complement a recording project by the Amsterdam Baroque
Orchestra and incorporating the complete Bach cantatas--covers the
sacred cantatas he wrote during the first 28 years of his life,
before his move to Leipzig in 1723.

That Johann Sebastian Bach is a pivotal figure in the history of
Western music is hardly news, and the magnitude of his achievement
is so immense that it can be difficult to grasp. In "About Bach,"
fifteen scholars show that Bach's importance extends from choral to
orchestral music, from sacred music to musical parodies, and also
to his scribes and students, his predecessors and successors.
Further, the contributors demonstrate a diversity of musicological
approaches, ranging from close studies of Bach's choices of musical
form and libretto to wider analyses of the historical and cultural
backgrounds that impinged upon his creations and their lasting
influence. This volume makes significant contributions to Bach
biography, interpretation, pedagogy, and performance.
Contributors are Gregory G. Butler, Jen-Yen Chen, Alexander J.
Fisher, Mary Dalton Greer, Robert Hill, Ton Koopman, Daniel R.
Melamed, Michael Ochs, Mark Risinger, William H. Scheide,
Hans-Joachim Schulze, Douglass Seaton, George B. Stauffer, Andrew
Talle, and Kathryn Welter.
An illuminating discussion of the musical, literary, aesthetic, and theological aspects of Bach's early cantatas.
The cantatas of J. S. Bach are among the best known and most frequently performed musical works of the Baroque period. But Bach's world is no longer our world, so when we hear and perform the cantatas, questions arise that are difficult to answer because we are experiencing the works outside their historical context. Such questions concern the role of the cantatas in Bach's compositional development, musical models for the works, and performance practice during the composer's lifetime. In The World of the Bach Cantatas, leading Bach scholars place the works in their historical and biographical context, guiding us through their literary, musical, aesthetic, and theological features. The book covers the sacred cantatas Bach wrote during the first twenty-eight years of his life, before his move to Leipzig in 1723. Contributing authors include Andreas Glöckner, Ulrich Leisinger, Daniel R. Melamed, Claus Oefner, Martin Petzoldt, Hans-Joachim Schulze, George B. Stauffer, and Peter Wollny. Designed as an accompaniment to Ton Koopman's complete set of cantatas now being recorded on the Erato label.
