It is Mr. Martin's hope that this book may help other depression sufferers, their family and friends to better understand their depression and for those who have lost a loved one to suicide maybe some possible answers as to what this person might have been dealing with.

Caribbean History - From Pre-Colonial Origins to the Present (Hardcover): Toni Martin Caribbean History - From Pre-Colonial Origins to the Present (Hardcover)
Toni Martin
R5,144 Discovery Miles 51 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

More centrally focused on the Caribbean than any other survey of the region, Caribbean History examines a wide range of topics to give students a thorough understanding of the region's history. The text favors a traditional, largely chronological approach to the study of Caribbean history, however, because it is impossible to be entirely chronological in the complex agglomeration of often disparate historical experiences, some thematic chapters occupy the broadly chronological framework. The author creates a readable narrative for undergraduates that contains the most recent scholarship and pays particular attention to the U.S.-Caribbean connection to more fully relate to students.

Debra Guthmann, Gabriel I. Lomas, Damara Goff Paris, Gabriel A. "Tony" Martin
R1,320 Discovery Miles 13 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The legal system is complex, and without appropriate access, many injustices can occur. Deaf people in the criminal justice system are routinely denied sign language interpreters, videophone access, and other accommodations at each stage of the legal process. The marginalization of deaf people in the criminal justice system is further exacerbated by the lack of advocates who are qualified to work with this population. Deaf People in the Criminal Justice System: Selected Topics on Advocacy, Incarceration, and Social Justice is the first book to illuminate the challenges faced by deaf people when they are arrested, incarcerated, or navigating the court system. This volume brings interdisciplinary contributors together to shed light on both the problems and solutions for deaf people in these circumstances. The contributors address issues such as accessibility needs; gaps regarding data collection and the need for more research; additional training for attorneys, court personnel, and prison staff; the need for more qualified sign language interpreters, including Certified Deaf Interpreters who provide services in court, prison, and juvenile facilities; substance use disorders; the school to prison nexus; and the need for advocacy. Students in training programs, researchers, attorneys, mental health professionals, sign language interpreters, family members, and advocates will be empowered by this much-needed resource to improve the experiences and outcomes for deaf people in the criminal justice system.

Adapted from historical texts and rare African-American cookbooks, the 125 recipes of Jubilee paint a rich, varied picture of the true history of African-American cooking: a cuisine far beyond soul food.

Toni Tipton-Martin, the first African-American food editor of a daily American newspaper, is the author of the James Beard Award-winning The Jemima Code, a history of African-American cooking found in--and between--the lines of three centuries' worth of African-American cookbooks. Tipton-Martin builds on that research in Jubilee, adapting recipes from those historic texts for the modern kitchen. What we find is a world of African-American cuisine--made by enslaved master chefs, free caterers, and black entrepreneurs and culinary stars--that goes far beyond soul food. It's a cuisine that was developed in the homes of the elite and middle class; that takes inspiration from around the globe; that is a diverse, varied style of cooking that has created much of what we know of as American cuisine.

When the Personal Was Political - Five Women Doctors Look Back (Paperback): Toni Martin When the Personal Was Political - Five Women Doctors Look Back (Paperback)

"When the Personal was Political" is the first social history of the post-feminist generation of women doctors, told through the story of five women who met in the freshman class of UCSF medical school in 1973, formed a study group for mutual support, and maintained their friendships for thirty years, weathering motherhood and managed care. Feminism opened the door, and they walked through, clueless but committed. They were a unique group, sandwiched between the individual women pioneers of previous decades who were proud to "think like men" and the women students of today who take access to professional school for granted. The pioneers were the scouts in the male-dominated profession; this generation was the landing party. The book raises the question, "What does it mean to be a 'woman doctor' if 'a doctor' is a man?" Despite the greater numbers of women in medicine today, women medical students still face choices (pediatrics or surgery?) where gender matters. Dr. Martin's thoughtful analysis combines an insider perspective and a lively writing style.

The Fish Kill Mission (Paperback): Tony Martin The Fish Kill Mission (Paperback)
Tony Martin
R284 Discovery Miles 2 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Fishkill Mission was Tony Martin's first of his six books. It was written fifteen years before the World Trade Center destruction, about an attack on a small part of Texas by a four-man team of vengeful Cuban terrorists. They are in our country for less than three days, kill over 100,000 people, destroy the economic viability of a region of over 75,000 square miles for decades to come, terrorize an entire nation and completely alter and redirect the political and defense priorities and the financial expenditures of the entire government structure at all levels; and, we never knew who they were or why they attacked us. Tony Martin asked several of his friends, relatives, and even an author's agent, to review it for him in 1986, and to the person, they said it was simply too frightening and asked him not to publish it for fear of giving ideas to terrorists. He acquiesced to their pleas, and wrote and published five other books over the next fifteen years. He dug the book out in 2000 to update it to reflect the political realities of the 1990's such as the fall of the USSR and the Gulf War, but again, he did not publish it. Since writing the book, Martin has been responsible for public water supplies in two different communities totaling well over 100,000 people, and the book reflects his long-standing belief that our life support infrastructure system exposes us to small unit attacks by our enemies with the greatest ease, the greatest long-term impact and the least probability of discovery or apprehension. Martin actually carried out the attacks described in the book using sand-filled containers and a camera, to ensure that the timetables and undetected access were possible andrealistic. Sadly, they were.
