This new third edition is a detailed, practical and colourful guide
to a popular 90-mile long distance walk across the glorious high
country of the Yorkshire Dales. The route starts from Saltaire in
West Yorkshire and crosses some of the finest and most spectacular
scenery the Dales has to offer, finishing at Appleby-in-Westmorland
in the lush Eden Valley. The return journey is made on the famous
Settle to Carlisle line - the most beautiful railway in England.
The book is specially designed for use as the primary route guide
for the walk. The route is set out in a series of detailed strip
maps at a scale of 1:25,000. The book is robust, pocket-sized and
the detailed route maps carry instructions on the maps themselves.
Each copy comes in a handy, weather-resistant plastic wallet.
For nearly 50 years John Scott has subjected the South African
scene to his unique brand of genial satire and throw-away humour.
This selection is his latest, in which he pokes relentless fun at
our pocket-filling politicians, but is gentler with other human
foibles such as the Springboks’ inability to beat the Japanese, the
churches’ struggle to put bums on pews, teacher truancy, a
co-pilot’s failure to pass his breathalyser test, how to understand
a Spanish-speaking locomo-tive, and whether to save school kids
from that arch-colonialist, Shakespeare.
He describes how he personally watched Pik Botha disappear behind
a curtain one night with an air hostess, tried to persuade a still
bashful Dr Christiaan Barnard to have his photograph taken, was
challenged by Athol Fugard to a typing contest and, in one of his
few serious moments, had an overwhelming encounter with Mother
Teresa.
The new edition of this book contains 32 walks from stations along
the world famous Settle-Carlisle line, the most beautiful railway
in England. There are 22 full colour maps at a scale of 1:25,000
with concise descriptions of the routes and places along the way.
There are 18 circular routes from stations along the line from
Settle to Kirkby Stephen, each between 6 and 13 miles long. There
are a further 14 linear walks from station to station. Taken as a
whole they provide a comprehensive coverage of the area of the
western Dales national Park along the railway. The Yorkshire Dales
offer some of the finest walking in England. In an area of less
than a thousand square miles you will find a unique blend of
contrasting landscapes. Running right across the heart of the
western Dales is England's most scenic railway, the Settle to
Carlisle line, recently voted one of the finest railway journeys in
the world. The book also includes a guide to the popular 24-mile
Three Peaks Challenge Route, and for lovers of long distance
walking there are details of the 48-mile Six Peaks Trail, which
links stations from Settle to Kirkby Stephen.
