Norway, 1965. A team of young climbers from the north of England camp at the bottom of the tallest vertical rock face in Europe - the Troll Wall. No one has dared attempt this gigantic challenge before. Some say it will never be climbed. This will be the adventure of a lifetime. Rain and snow soak them as they climb. Avalanches and loose rock threaten their lives. A Norwegian team arrives to compete for the glory as the world's media look on. Pushed to the limits of exhaustion, the team spends days on the wall, refusing to given in, even when failure seems certain. "Troll Wall" tells the gripping story of one of the most dramatic first ascents in British climbing history. Written days after their success, almost half a century ago, and newly rediscovered, Tony Howard's account is a fascinating insight into the challenges of climbing a big mountain wall.

Reading the Apocalypse in Bed - Selected Plays and Short Pieces (Paperback): Tadeusz Rozewicz Reading the Apocalypse in Bed - Selected Plays and Short Pieces (Paperback)
Tadeusz Rozewicz; Translated by Barbara Plebanek, Tony Howard; Edited by Tony Howard; Translated by Adam Czerniawski
R420 Discovery Miles 4 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In his remand cell, a small-time petty criminal surrenders himself to the sadistic fantasties of hatred, rage and despair that are trapped inside him. This terrifying, claustrophobic descent into the isolated mind of a man locked away from society becomes, in Selby's compassionate literary tour de force, a challeging vision of a world deprived of love. The blistering follow-up to Selby's best-selling cult classic Last Exit to Brooklyn, The Room still has the power to provoke, to chill and to disturb

Highly Commended, Outdoor Book category, Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild Awards for Excellence 2019 We are all climbing where we are and with the gear we use in no small part due to Tony Howard's quest for adventure. Tony Howard rose to fame in 1965 as a member of a group of young climbers from northern England who made the first British ascent of Norway's Troll Wall; a climb described by Joe Brown as, 'One of the greatest ever achievements by British rock climbers'. Tony went on to design the modern sit harness, now used worldwide by most climbers. He founded the company Troll Climbing Equipment but never stopped exploring. Quest into the Unknown is his story. Tony has dedicated his life to travelling the world in search of unclimbed rock faces and remote trekking adventures. The scale of his travels is vast: he has visited all of the North African countries, much of the Arab land of the Middle East, the mountainous regions of Scandinavia, Canada and the rocky spine of the Americas, the Himalaya, remote Indian provinces, South East Asia, Madagascar, South Georgia and Antarctica. This book, the last word in adventure travel, takes the reader from Tony's youth spent developing the crags of the English Peak District, via whaling ships in the Southern Ocean, thousand-mile canoe trips in the Canadian Arctic, living amongst the Bedouin in the rocky mountains of Jordan, to the isolated opium tribes of Thailand. Tony Howard's Quest into the Unknown is the jaw-dropping account of a life of adventure that is the very definition of true exploration.

Where learning the Thai alphabet is concerned, regardless of whether you've tried and been unsuccessful, or never even looked at it, you're in for a treat:

"How simple an idea in Memory Aids "

"Brock Estes, Richmond, VA, 15th September 2013)"

Why? Let me explain...

Think of the last birthday party or happy event you went to. What do you see? Perhaps you see the pictures of the event, your friends, and your family even; and, can see the room, the people, where they are, what they were wearing, saying, etc.

I'm sure you do, because that's what everyone does. Every time you try and think of, or try to recall, something from your memory, your brain tries to locate it. When it finds it, it conjures up a picture - that's how the human brain works; and, is how we designed "Memory Aids to Your Great Adventure (MATYGA)" - in pictures.

These simple, easy to remember pictures encompass everything you need to know about the Thai alphabet. If you're trying to learn the consonants, the picture that has everything in it that you need to know: the sound (or sounds - some Thai consonants make more than one sound) and the consonant class (High, Middle, or Low Class) - that's it. If you're trying to learn the vowels it's even easier as they only make one sound and they don't have any class (they're still cool, but only consonants have classes).

""Well, I agree that your app and those posts are like a speed-of-light catalyst in terms of teaching one the Thai script and reading it within literally two days (in my experience) which I find extraordinary.""*

"Emiliusz Smorczewski, Illinois, USA, 9th July 2013"

If interactive learning is your thing, then check out our web (or iPad) app at www.learnthaialphabet.com. Based on MATYGA, it but offers interactivity, tests, sounds by native speakers, and much more. It takes the book to a whole new level.

Continuing your "Quest" from Vol I (LTYGA), our entire system with simplicity and ease in mind.

Yes, Vol II is part of a series, but it is also a standalone book - you don't need the other books to learn the Thai alphabet. This book will get you up to speed in literally no time at all.

.".". already I have achieved more than I would have thought possible in such a short space of time. "

"I decided to study the Middle and High class consonants first... then the Low class consonants. I then followed the same pattern with the vowels... Suddenly I was looking at Thai writing and beginning to see words forming ... fantastic This has been a brilliant start for me Russ ... Your colour code and picture aids make learning so much easier ...""

"Orville Earle, London, UK, 09 October 2013"

Women as Hamlet - Performance and Interpretation in Theatre, Film and Fiction (Paperback): Tony Howard Women as Hamlet - Performance and Interpretation in Theatre, Film and Fiction (Paperback)
Tony Howard
R1,323 Discovery Miles 13 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first Hamlet on film was Sarah Bernhardt. Probably the first Hamlet on radio was Eve Donne. Ever since the late eighteenth century, leading actresses have demanded the right to play the role - Western drama's greatest symbol of active consciousness and conscience. Their iconoclasm, and Hamlet's alleged 'femininity', have fascinated playwrights, painters, novelists and film-makers from Eugene Delacroix and the Victorian novelist Mary Braddon to Angela Carter and Robert Lepage. Crossing national and media boundaries, this book addresses the history and the shifting iconic status of the female Hamlet in writing and performance. Many of the performers were also involved in radical politics: from Stalinist Russia to Poland under martial law, actresses made Hamlet a symbol of transformation or crisis in the body politic. On stage and film, women reinvented Hamlet from Weimar Germany to the end of the Cold War. This book aims to put their half-forgotten achievements centre-stage.
