A full scholarly edition of Dowsing's record of his and his deputies' activities in Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Norfolk, 1643-4. During the Civil War, in late 1643 and 1644, the Suffolk puritan William Dowsing visited some hundred parish churches in Cambridgeshire, and about a hundred and fifty in Suffolk, smashing stained glass and other 'superstitious' imagery, ripping up monumental brass inscriptions, destroying altar rails and steps, and pulling down crucifixes and crosses. He dealt equally vigorously with the chapels of the Cambridge colleges, still fresh from their Laudian re-ordering. This modern edition of Dowsing's journal brings together, with commentary, the Cambridgeshire and Suffolk sections of his record of what he destroyed, never previously published together. Dowsing and his character and beliefs are set in context, with coverage of Dowsing and the administration of iconoclasm; the work of Dowsing and his deputies in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk; Dowsing and Cambridge University, and the arguments at PembrokeCollege; evidence of destruction in the other counties of the Eastern Association; the text and history of the journal. She offers information about a crime, but she demands legal immunity, and guarantees for her safety before she’ll talk. A visitor from Earth seems particularly determined to stop the Star Cops gaining a foothold on Mars and calls a meeting of colony leaders in an attempt to end their efforts once and for all. When one of his officers is kidnapped, Nathan begins to wonder who he can trust on this planet. 2.6: The Highest Ground by Andrew Smith. The conspiracy is revealed, and its leader is desperate to silence the Star Cops. An armed squad closes in on Nathan, his officers and their Martian allies, leading to a siege in the shadow of Olympus Mons, the highest mountain in the solar system. And a violent confrontation on its slopes. It’s time for some to decide where their loyalties truly lie before it’s too late. An attempt to come to his friends' rescue goes wrong, and he finds himself at the mercy of colonists who hold his life in their hands. Matters will come to a head in a perilous stand-off on the four-mile-high cliffs of the Mariner Valley canyon. 2.3 Whatever Happened to Gary Rice? by Guy Adams. After the Star Cops receive a cryptic message about a man who may once have worked at a colony in the Argyre Basin, they make their way there to investigate. They find a co-operative community that thrives by growing an organic food source, which it sells to other colonies. But no-one seems to remember the man the Star Cops are looking for. Nathan visits a neighbouring scientific research base, where nutritionist Dr Julienne Grainger has information that may resolve the mystery of the missing colonist. As the Star Cops get closer to discovering the truth, there are those who are prepared to kill to keep it secret. It's believed that the group is finished. But instead, Mother Earth is about to renew its campaign. This time with even more ferocity and violence. 2.1: Dead and Buried by Guy Adams. At Lunar Interments, the moon's graveyard for the wealthy, the caretaker has noticed something odd in the burial records. Odd enough for him to call in the Star Cops. Devis isn't happy at being assigned to what he thinks is a mundane case. Not when Nathan and Kenzy are off to investigate a burglary at the home of billionaire businessman Ben Alexander. A break-in where the burglar has finished up dead. But in the lunar resting place of the dead, Devis will find himself racing against the clock to save his life and hundreds of others. 2.2: The Killing Jar by John Dorney. The Charlie Chaplin is a second-hand space station operated as a space-tourism hub by entrepreneur Martin Thane. When Nathan receives reports that serious accidents and even a death have been caused by Thane flouting safety laws, he decides to investigate. An accident investigation soon becomes a murder enquiry. And as the Star Cops hunt for the killer, the station becomes a death trap threatening everyone on board. 2.3: Moonshine by Roland Moore. A friend of Kenzy's on the space station Coral Sea has been dismissed for possession of alcohol and sent back to Earth. She believes his claim that he was framed, and when she learns of his subsequent suicide she and Devis travel to Australia to investigate. A difficult enquiry is not helped when Kenzy's former fiance, a Police Superintendent, appears on the scene. On Moonbase, Nathan is expecting an official visit from a powerful dignitary. So it's not a good time for there to be a fatal incident that may be the work of Mother Earth. 2.4: Hostage by Andrew Smith. The activist group Mother Earth, ideologically opposed to humanity's presence in space, has been quiet for some time. But no longer. Soon, they and everyone else in the building find themselves in danger as a disruptive attack by Mother Earth coincides with a plot by criminals to carry out a high stakes robbery. 1.4 The Thousand Ton Bomb by Guy Adams. A failed bombing of Moonbase provides the Star Cops with an opportunity to strike back at Mother Earth. Paul Bailey is called on to use his undercover skills once more. Berlin, East and West, crucible of contrasting cultural, economic and political ideologies. This was the setting for an exercise in reconciliation. It was in response to an invitation by the German Lutheran churches in Berlin to the staff of the New Coventry Cathedral early in the 60's. All were concerned to engage in practical ways to redress the atrocities of war, and the affects on the human psyche. Newly introduced to the mission at the Cathedral, Trevor Cooper included such concerns in his brief, as an industrial chaplain there for twenty-five years. Throughout the 70's and 80's he persuaded industrial employers, the trades unions, educational bodies, local authorities and governmental bodies to get involved in the planning and execution of educational exchange programmes in Coventry and the West Midlands. He encouraged them to enable their own staff, employees and young workers, to participate in the reciprocal visits organized by his German counterparts in Berlin. This book represents a realistic moral and ethical appraisal of the social influences on the lives of human beings, albeit living in an extraordinary environment. But, when reading the daily news, today, in our increasingly interdependent world, the need for such a critique of societies generally would appear to be continually appropriate. Asked if he would read the manuscript, before publication, Alan Webster remarked that it represented a truly Christian analysis. And that it effectively responded to the declaration on the cover of his book: Reaching for Reality (2002), 'Churches are given to tradition, but there comes a time when tradition no longer excites the living. Vision and change are needed.'
