First published in 1972. Militant protest is not new to British
politics, but the widespread recourse to direct action, in Britain
and abroad, is unprecedented. This book was the first comprehensive
examination of contemporary protest in the British context. The
contributors represented leading agencies of protest as well as
those academics who had made this phenomenon their special concern.
The result is a unique blend of direct experience and objective
reflection. The first part of the volume covers the theoretical and
historical dimensions of protest, and is followed by a detailed
consideration of specific issues (Ulster, race, the Bomb, students
and community action). An analysis is then made of the reaction of
the State to such protest through legislative and administrative
channels. The final part shows the intermediary roles of political
parties, MPs, the NCCL and the mass media. The book concludes with
a critical examination of the interaction between protest and
representative democracy and the implications which arise from it.
Students of politics and sociology as well as political activists
of all shades of opinion will find this book essential to an
understanding of the bases of protest movements.

From the 1980s, many Chinese artists have experimented with a range
of unconventional materials. Their works-in plastic, paper, silk,
ash, and tobacco-form a major trend in Chinese art. The Allure of
Matter offers the first serious consideration of these
ground-breaking material explorations, coining the term Material
Art to describe works that place "matter" itself as the primary
vehicle of investigation and expression. The book contains four
ground-breaking essays, profiles of twenty-five artists, and
corresponding color images.

Have you ever wondered what happens to that one missing sock of a
pair? If you have ever been folding laundry and come up with lone
socks, then you may have Sock Gnomes living in your home. Billy
Coatbutton is one such Gnome. It is the day of Billy's first test
of mastery, a test to see if he will become a treasure hunter like
his father. Billy has studied, practiced and prepared for this day
for years. Like all Gnomes that have come of age, Billy will soon
spin the Wheel of Destiny and discover which item it is that he
must find to become a treasure hunter within Sockefeller castle.
Along the way he meets an old recluse Sock Gnome named Helix
BonsaiTree, who has more than a little to say about the practices
of the greedy Sockefellers, and helps Billy to chose the right
path. During his dangerous quest Billy must overcome a vicious rat,
a hungry cat, and many other obstacles, all without the help or
protection of Gnomeland Sockurity. He is determined to pass his
test of mastery on the first try, a feat accomplished by only one
other Sock Gnome, his father. Billy will face many decisions, the
greatest of all will leave the life of a human child hanging in the
balance.
From R.W.Paul to Alfred Hitchcock, this is the fascinating story of
the development of British Cinema during the silent era. This
second edition is well illustrated with stills from the author's
private collection.
It is now Year One, foretold to be the final year before The End of
Roc Isle. In the North, Lord Azure of the Azure-Cloud Clan vows
revenge on those responsible for ordering the assassination of his
parents. Lord Azure will invade the South in reprisal, and to rid
the land of the infidel. But first he needs to raise an army to his
banner, which will prove difficult. The Azure-Cloud Clan is
divided: the Azure-Knights of Crag Rock refuse to owe him their
allegiance. In spite of this, Lord Azure is the greatest warrior of
his clan, and his search for redemption and vengeance will not be
stopped until Roc Isle answers to him. In the South, Ankah is a
Knight Prentice. Frustrated that he is yet to be ordained, he
wonders what his destiny is and why it is he wants to fight. He is
the strongest, fastest, and most determined of swordsmen. Only a
titanic clash between clans and a monstrous release of sorcery and
swords will reveal the truth. This is The Descent
