Let's Go In - My Journey to a University Presidency (Paperback): T. Alan Hurwitz Let's Go In - My Journey to a University Presidency (Paperback)
T. Alan Hurwitz
R728 Discovery Miles 7 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Alan Hurwitz ascended the ranks of academia to become the president of not one, but two, universities-National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology and Gallaudet University. In Let's Go In: My Journey to a University Presidency, Hurwitz discusses the unique challenges he encountered as a Deaf person, and the events, people, and experiences that shaped his personal and professional life. He demonstrates the importance of building a strong foundation for progressive leadership roles in higher education, and provides insights into the decision-making and outreach required of a university president, covering topics such as community collaboration, budget management, and networking with public policy leaders. He also stresses that assessing students' needs should be a top priority. As he reflects on a life committed to service in higher education, Hurwitz offers up important lessons on the issues, challenges, and opportunities faced by deaf and hard of hearing people, and in doing so, inspires future generations of deaf people to aim for their highest goals. Additional images, videos, and supplemental readings are available at the Gallaudet University Press/Manifold online platform. Visit the GU Press website to access this multimedia resource.

Encountering God in the Stillness - The North Shore Story (Hardcover): T. Alan Stumbo Encountering God in the Stillness - The North Shore Story (Hardcover)
T. Alan Stumbo
R825 Discovery Miles 8 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We are always searching for things to do in order to draw God nearer to us, when all that is really needed is to become still before Him. In an age of technological commotion and striving to succeed, few of us see how busy we really are. It has been said, "Busyness is not of the devil; busyness is the devil." Noise, entertainment, habits, and everyday distractions are keeping many believers from breaking through to true rest, and fullness in Christ.

Will you become one of those who discover the treasure of stillness? Will you take the challenge and rise from the ashes with a new heart, a new spirit, renewed strength, renewed passion, and a new purpose for living? Join the author as he retells the story of his life-changing experience on the North Shore of Lake Superior. It was during a year of stillness and seclusion that he discovered what was missing from his daily walk with God.

When we encounter God-we are changed. When we are changed-we discover peace and rest. Are you weary from all the noise? Are you languishing spiritually? He still speaks to the weary, heavy laden, hungry and thirsty. Come and sit a spell. Be still and know that He is God. He is God, be still and you will know Him.

Paradigms in Phonological Theory (Paperback, New): Laura J. Downing, T. Alan Hall, Renate Raffelsiefen Paradigms in Phonological Theory (Paperback, New)
Laura J. Downing, T. Alan Hall, Renate Raffelsiefen
R2,595 Discovery Miles 25 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents new insights on the phonology-morphology interface. It discusses a wide range of central theoretical issues, including the role of paradigms in synchronic grammars, and does so in the context of a wide variety of languages including several non-Indo-European languages. Paradigm uniformity has a long tradition in pre-generative linguistics but until recently played a minor role in theoretical phonology. Optimality Theory has drawn renewed attention to paradigmatic effects, formalized by constraints comparing the surface pronunciation of morphologically related words. The ten chapters in this volume illustrate how a wide range of exceptions to regular phonological processes can be explained in this fashion. The chapters address such important theoretical questions as: do paradigms have a morphological base? If so, how is it defined? Why do paradigmatic effects hold for only certain subsets of words? In which areas of the grammar are paradigmatic effects likely to be found? The authors discuss new data from the synchronic grammars of a wide variety of unrelated languages, including: Modern Hebrew, Chimwiini and Jita (Bantu), Halkomelem (Salish), Hungarian, and Arabic.
