In 2011 while riding his motorbike through Mali, on his way home from London to Johannesburg, Stephen McGown was taken captive in Timbuktu by Al Qaeda. He was held captive for almost six years giving him the unenviable record of Al Qaeda’s longest held prisoner.
Together with writer Tudor Caradoc-Davies, he wrote his book Six Years With Al Qaeda: The Stephen McGown Story. In this inspirational biography Steve uncovers the extraordinary lengths he went through to survive; from learning French and Arabic, converting to Islam and accepting a name given to him by his captors. His aim was to raise his status among Al Qaeda, keep himself alive and hopefully make his way back home.
Thousands of kilometres away in Johannesburg, the shock of his kidnapping hit his wife Cath and the rest of the McGown family. Working every option they could find, from established diplomatic protocols to the murky back channels of the kidnap game, they set to work on trying to free Steve.
Months turned to years and while the captive-captor dynamic was ever-present, Steve witnessed first hand what no westerner has ever seen before, giving him a nuanced perspective on one of the worlds most feared terrorist organisations.
WELCOME TO DEADHART. ALASKA. POPULATION 673. LIVING.
In a small Alaskan town, a boy is found with his throat ripped out and
the blood drained from his body.
The brutality of the murder of chillingly echoes a killing from
twenty-five years ago.
Out-of-state detective Barbara Atkins is brought in to assist the
sheriff, Jensen Tucker, who investigated the original case.
However, the inhabitants of Deadhart believe they know who is
responsible: one of the nearby vampyr colony who live in an old mining
settlement deep in the mountains.
Barbara is under pressure to authorize a cull of the entire colony.
But the evidence doesn’t stack up, people are lying, and the more
Barbara and Tucker delve into Deadhart’s history, the darker the
secrets they uncover.
As the snow thickens and the nights grow longer, another teenager goes
missing and body parts are found.
Time is running out for Barbara and Tucker to find the truth.
Are they hunting a cold-blooded murderer, or a bloodthirsty monster?
And which is more dangerous?
Drawing on clinical experience dating from the birth of the NHS in
1948, Julian Tudor Hart, a politically active GP in a Welsh coal
mining community, charts the progress of the NHS from its 19th
century origins in workers' mutual aid societies, to its current
forced return to the market. His starting point is a detailed
analysis of how clinical decisions are made. He explores the
changing social relationships in the NHS as a gift economy, how
these may be affected by reducing care to commodity status, and the
new directions they might take if the NHS resumed progress
independently from the market. This new edition of this bestselling
book has been entirely rewritten with two new chapters, and
includes new material on resistance to that world-wide process. The
essential principle in the book is that patients need to develop as
active citizens and co-producers of health gain in a humanising
society and the author's aim is to promote it wherever people
recognise that pursuit of profit may be a brake on rational
progress.
