R812 Discovery Miles 8 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 1977, Max Neuhaus turned a triangle of pedestrian space between 45th and 46th Streets in Times Square into an island of harmonic sound. The rich textures of that sound continue today, emanating from beneath the sidewalk grating, to anonymously reach an individual's ears as if one has stumbled upon a secret. Known as Times Square, the celebrated installation was restored in 2002 with support from Dia Art Foundation, which further commissioned a site-specific piece, Time Piece Beacon, from Neuhaus in 2006 for its museum in Beacon, New York. This stunning book-the only volume in print dedicated solely to the work of Neuhaus-takes these two projects as a point of departure from which to consider the singular impact this artist has had in establishing sound as a medium in contemporary art. An interview with Neuhaus is complemented with essays by multidisciplinary scholars who investigate and situate his work within a historical context. Distributed for Dia Art Foundation

Thomas Schtte has frequently cast himself into the role of a maverick--remained remote from the work of his artistic mentor, distanced himself from the statements of each ephemeral Zeitgeist and increasingly contradicted his own positions--and in so doing has become one of the most influential artists of his generation. Shifting from text to image to object to book, his work juxtaposes biographical moments with contemporary events, oscillates between the aspiration to shape the public reception of architecture and monumental sculpture and the conjunctive of model-maker, and projects avant-garde ideas onto traditional forms of art. With meticulous rigor, Ulrich Loock has observed the evolution of Schtte's output over the past 25 years. Underpinning his lucid overview is a series of intensive discussions between the author and artist on the genesis and history of particular works. This well-designed book is the most comprehensive monograph of the artist's work to date, and provides profound insight into Schtte's work through detailed discussions of the pieces.

R829 Discovery Miles 8 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is the first major exploration of the works of American abstract painter and watercolorist Suzan Frecon (b. 1941), critically acclaimed for her sensitive arrangement of color, form, and texture, and for the philosophical resonance of her art. By restricting herself to nonrepresentational forms, earth-based colors, and, in the case of her watercolors, "found" pieces of paper, Frecon achieves an unequaled sense of balance and openness in her work. The book features ten oil paintings and thirty watercolors dating from the late 1990s to 2007. form, color, illumination celebrates the uniqueness of Frecon's painting and articulates how her work distinguishes itself within the history of abstract painting. The authors describe in-depth how her artistic process and materials are an integral part of her focus and aesthetic. Included is an essay revealing the "ethics" of her aesthetics--an argument for abstraction and an attention to truth that is not divorced from social and environmental concerns. Distributed for The Menil Collection Exhibition Schedule: The Menil Collection, Houston (March 6 - May 11, 2008) Kunstmuseum Bern (June 11 - September 28, 2008)

Through a decade of friendship, sharing the same environs and being active collectors, Sonja Graber and Christian Graber are inextricably connected to the photographer Annelies Strba, the jewellery and object artist Bernhard Schobinger and the painter Adrian Schiess. A far cry from thoughts of prestige and conjecture, one of the most extensive collections from all genres of the three Swiss artists has now emerged out of artistic and personal esteem. In the collectors, the artists and the Kunsthaus Zug, like-minded people have come together in the most indiscriminate appreciation of fine and applied art. To mark the occasion of the donation of the Graber collections to the museum, the three internationally renowned artists along with hitherto largely unpublished works are now united in one publication. Contents: Art is an Experiment for Us by Matthias Haldemann; Supporting the Artists: Building the Graber Collection by Marco Obrist; Things, Art ... Art Things by Felix Philipp Ingold; Undine's Song by Ildegarda Scheidegger; The Year's Production from 1981, the Start of Painting by Ulrich Loock; The Graber Collection at Kunsthaus Zug; artists' biographies. Text in English and German.
