This book reflects on the significant and highly original scientific contributions of Hans Primas. A professor of chemistry at ETH Zurich from 1962 to 1995, Primas continued his research activities until his death in 2014. Over these 50 years and more, he worked on the foundations of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, contributed to a number of significant issues in theoretical chemistry, helped to clarify central topics in quantum theory and the philosophy of physics, suggested innovative ways of addressing interlevel relations in the philosophy of science, and introduced cutting-edge approaches in the flourishing young field of scientific studies of consciousness. Das Buch entspringt zwei Vorlesungen, die Hans Primas an der ETH Zurich gehalten hat. Es vermittelt die Grundlagen der allgemeinen Spektroskopie und erarbeitet die dazu erforderlichen theoretischen Hilfsmittel: Thermostatik, statistische Mechanik, Dichteoperatoren, Dynamik offener Quantensysteme, lineare Antworttheorie. In den Anwendungen finden sich die Blochschen Gleichungen der Kernresonanz, Fermis /golden rule/, die Einsteinschen UEbergangswahrscheinlichkeiten, Linienverbreiterungen u.a.m. Der besondere Reiz der Darstellung liegt in dem sehr persoenlichen Zugang, Ergebnis einer jahrzehntelangen kritischen Auseinandersetzungen mit den theoretischen Grundlagen und einer herausragenden Literaturkenntnis in Mathematik und den theoretischen Naturwissenschaften.

One of the major challenges of our time is the management of risks emanating from modern technologies. Yet as diverse as these technologies are, ranging from nuclear power generation over genetically modified organisms to nanotechnology and many more, as different are the risk management and regulation strategies offered to cope with their potential risks. This book is therefore dedicated to one of these strategies, the Precautionary Principle. The book offers a general model for the implementation of the Precautionary Principle for risk regulation. At the same time, the book integrates various scientific approaches towards the Precautionary Principle, such as the social sciences, natural sciences and law.

Die Quantentheorie ist eine der grossen kulturellen Leistungen unseres Jahrhunderts und Teil der allgemeinen Bildung fur all jene, die uber die mathe matischen Voraussetzungen zu ihrem Verstandnis verfugen. Die eindrucklichen Er folge der molekularen Quantenmechanik und ihr immenser praktischer Wert lassen es vor allem fur den experimentell arbeitenden Naturwissenschaftler wunschens wert erscheinen, die Grundlagen der Quantenchemie auch in den Einzelheiten tie fer zu verstehen. Die vorliegende Darstellung geht bewusst neue Wege und versucht, durch eine zeitgerechte Einfuhrung in die molekulare Quantenmechanik zu eigenem Weiter denken anzuregen. Dass sich die Quantentheorie in den letzten 30 Jahren wesent lich weiterentwickelt hat und dass wir heute manches besser verstehen koennen, als es den Pionieren der Quantenmechanik moeglich war, sollte sich nach unserer Meinung endlich auch in den Lehrbuchern niederschlagen. Nach Darstellungsart, Aufbau und Stoffauswahl richtet sich diese Einfuh rung in erster Linie an Studierende der Chemie und anderer Naturwissenschaften. Das Buch entspringt einer einsernestrigen Einfuhrungsvorlesung von vier Wochen stunden, welche seit etwa 15 Jahren an der ETH Zurich fur Chemiker im dritten Studiensemester gelesen wurde. Die molekulare Quantenmechanik ist heute ein sehr umfangreiches Gebiet, welches sich in einem Buch dieses Umfangs nicht darlegen lasst. Aus diesem Grunde war eine Beschrankung auf die chemisch wichtigen Grund lagen geboten, auf denen dann die Theorie der chemischen Bindung, die Molekul spektroskopie und die statistische Thermodynamik entwickelt werden koennen.
