The risks involved in introducing new drugs and devices are amongst the most discussed issues of modern medicine. Presenting a new way of thinking about these issues, this volume considers risk and medical innovation from a social historical perspective, and studies specific cases of medical innovation, including X-rays, the pill and Thalidomide, in their respective contexts. International cases are examined through the lens of a particular set of shared questions - highlighting differences, similarities, continuities and changes, and offering a historical sociology of risk. Particularly important is the re-conceptualization of dangers in terms of risk - a numerical and probabilistic approach allowing for seemingly objective and value-neutral decisions. Read together, these papers add to our understanding of the current debate about risk and safety by providing a comparative background to the discussion, as well as a set of generally applicable criteria for analyzing and evaluating the contemporary issues surrounding medical innovation.

The contributors reflect in 26 articles on the impact of the Code, events which prompted it including Japan, and more recent ethical issues raised. The book contains the results of two European/American preparatory workshops for the First World Conference on Ethics Codes in Medicine and Biotechnology (October 1997 Freiburg, Germany) supported by the leading national institutions in the field. It aims to stimulate research about codes, the effects of codification and other forms of implementing ethics. It breaks new ground with interdisciplinary and international discourse on the subject, emphasising the need for a complete collection of codes for systematic research and evaluation and filling the gap in literature on the subject to date.

Die arztliche Ethik diente als Hauptargument der AErzteschaft, zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts staatlich legitimierte Ehrengerichtshoefe zur Disziplinierung der Mediziner einzurichten. Die Urteile der Ehrengerichtshoefe in Preussen und Sachsen zeigten jedoch andere Inhalte: Ethische Probleme spielten hier kaum eine Rolle. Die arztliche Ehre stand im Mittelpunkt der Prozesse. Verfahren wegen Beleidigung, Kritik an Kollegen aber auch wegen Abtreibung und sexueller UEbergriffe folgten der Logik der Ehre. Mit Hilfe der theoretischen Ansatze der Soziologen Georg Simmel und Pierre Bourdieu wird das Phanomen der arztlichen Ehre und seine Bedeutung fur die Medikalisierung analysiert.
