The compendium presents the latest results of the most prominent
competitions held in the field of Document Analysis and Text
Recognition. It includes a description of the participating systems
and the underlying methods on one hand and the datasets used
together with evaluation metrics on the other hand. This volume
also demonstrates with examples, how to organize a competition and
how to make it successful. It will be an indispensable handbook to
the document image analysis community.
As technologies are fast advancing, the importance of text
detection and recognition is receiving special attention from the
researchers. Thus, one can see several real-time applications of
video text processing which requires cognitive-based methods to
find a solution. The main applications are (1) retrieving and
indexing video based on semantic of the content of the video, (2)
machine translation to assist foreigners, (3) assisting blind
people to walk on the road freely without aid, (4) automatic
vehicle driving, (5) license plate tracing to catch vehicles which
violate the traffic signals, (6) monitoring the images posted on
social media based on text and content of the images, (7)
identifying the location based on the address of the street and
shops, etc., (8) tracing players in the sports based on the
jersey/bib number or text, and (9) in the same way, tracing the bib
number in case of marathon and other events. For the
above-mentioned applications, text detection and recognition in
video and natural scene images is an integral part of the system.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 4th
International Conference on Recent Trends in Image Processing and
Pattern Recognition, RTIP2R 2021, held in Msida, Malta, in December
2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held online.
The 19 full papers and 14 short papers presented were carefully
reviewed and selected from 84 submissions. The papers are organized
in the following topical sections: healthcare: medical imaging and
informatics; computer vision and pattern recognition; document
analysis and recognition; signal processing and machine learning;
satellite imaging and remote sensing.
This book constitutes the proceedings of the international
workshops co-located with the 16th International Conference on
Document Analysis and Recognition, ICDAR 2021, held in Lausanne,
Switzerland, in September 2021.The total of 59 full and 12 short
papers presented in this book were carefully selected from 96
submissions and divided into two volumes. Part II contains 30 full
and 8 short papers that stem from the following meetings: Workshop
on Machine Learning (WML); Workshop on Open Services and Tools for
Document Analysis (OST); Workshop on Industrial Applications of
Document Analysis and Recognition (WIADAR); Workshop on
Computational Paleography (IWCP); Workshop on Document Images and
Language (DIL); Workshop on Graph Representation Learning for
Scanned Document Analysis (GLESDO).
