During the reign of the Kingdom of Burgundy at the Rhone River
(about 443-534) a Burgundian church developed with an
"Arian"-homoian profile. This led to disputes, but also to an
intensive theological exchange with the predominantly Nicene
Gallo-Roman population and with Bishop Avitus of Vienne. For the
first time, this monograph provides selected letters and fragments
written by Avitus, with German translation and annotation, which
indicate problems of church organization and refer to discourses on
religion and theological discussions - in particular on the Holy
Spirit (filioque) - in order to clarify more exactly the meaning of
"Arian" at that time.
The third fascicle of the first part of volume 3 of Athanasiusa
(TM) Works continues the publication of documents relating to the
history of the Arian conflict, carrying on the work started by
Hans-Georg Opitz in 1934 and 1935.The fascicle contains inter alia
the texts from the Synods of Antioch 326/27, Jerusalem 335, Rome
and Antioch 338-341 and the Ekthesis makrostichos; it is
accompanied by a detailed introduction on the chronology of the
beginnings of the Arian heresy, a German translation of the
documents already published, and a bibliography and reference
index.

Brennecke, die zeigen, wie das Christentum der Kaiserzeit und der
Spatantike in den Kontext des Imperium Romanum eingebettet ist. Das
Themenspektrum reicht von den fruhen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen
Christentum und der paganen Welt uber trinitatstheologische und
christologische Fragen bis zu Analysen des syrischen Moenchtums.

Forschung nachhaltig beeinflusst.

commentary is provided on the basis of all available manuscripts:

ad Palladium, Epistula ad Dracontium, Epistula ad Afros, Epistula
ad Jovianum, Epistula Joviani ad Athanasium, Petitiones Arianorum,
Tomus ad Antiochenos. An extensive introduction as well as an index
of references, indexes of names and words to the entire second
volume of the Athanasius Werke are provided in this fascicle.
