The Moulids of Egypt 2022 - Egyptian Saint's Day Festivals (Hardcover): J.W. Mcpherson The Moulids of Egypt 2022 - Egyptian Saint's Day Festivals (Hardcover)
J.W. Mcpherson; Foreword by E. E. Evams-Pritchard, Valerie J. Hoffman; Edited by Russell McGurik; Commentary by Russell McGuirk
R1,442 Discovery Miles 14 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a study of moulids, the popular Egyptian religious festivals (Muslim and Christian) as they were in the first half of the 20th century. Moulids also had a secular side, where sports, games, theatres, shadowplays, beer booths, sweet stalls, eating houses, dancing, and laughter, were as much part of the festival as the religious processions and the whirling of dervishes. Nor were the festivals exclusive to one religion or the other- Muslims and Christians happily attended each other's moulids. Some of the rites and customs date from as far back as the Pharaonic period, but the moulids are gradually dying out. Many of the 126 festivals described here have since faded away, making the book of lasting interest. Published in Cairo at the height of the Second World War, Bimbashi McPherson's The Moulids of Egypt is a fascinating and highly original contribution to the study of the country's religious folklore and practice.

Making the New Middle East - Politics, Culture, and Human Rights (Paperback): Valerie J. Hoffman Making the New Middle East - Politics, Culture, and Human Rights (Paperback)
Valerie J. Hoffman
R1,399 Discovery Miles 13 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Demands for freedom, justice, and dignity have animated protests and revolutions across the Middle East in recent years, from the Iranian Green Movement and the Arab Spring uprisings to Turkey's March for Justice and the ongoing struggle in Palestine. Although expectations raised by the Arab Spring were largely disappointed and protests that toppled entrenched rulers unleashed vicious counterrevolutionary forces, there is no doubt that the landscape of the Middle East has changed. Drawing from diverse disciplines, this volume offers critical perspectives on these changes, covering politics, religion, gender dynamics, human rights, media, literature, and music. What ultimately has changed in ""the new Middle East""? Who are the actors pushing the direction of change? How are aspirations for change being expressed through media and the arts? With extensive analysis and thoughtful reflection, this book gives readers an in-depth portrayal of a modernizing Middle East.

Sufism, Mystics, and Saints in Modern Egypt (Paperback): Valerie J. Hoffman Sufism, Mystics, and Saints in Modern Egypt (Paperback)
Valerie J. Hoffman; Series edited by Frederick M. Denny
R1,045 Discovery Miles 10 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is a fascinating insider's account of Sufi life in contemporary Egypt. For centuries Sufism - Islamic mysticism - held a major place in Islamic spirituality, intellectual life, and popular religion. While many scholars have commented on Sufism's decline, few have delved deeply into present-day Egyptian Sufism or considered it as a system in its own right. Drawing on her detailed fieldwork and a variety of little-known literary sources, Valerie J. Hoffman presents Sufism as it exists in Egypt today, in the vivid experiences of its adherents. With an array of conclusions that overturn widely held beliefs about modern Sufis, Hoffman argues that the apparent assimilation of Egyptian Sufism masks a thriving movement hidden from the Western world. From her experiences as a quasi disciple of a Sufi master, she offers new insights into the movement's evolution, the vital role of women in Sufism, and Sufi perspectives on gender and sexuality.
