Biofuel is an eco-friendly, alternative diesel fuel prepared from domestic renewable resources i.e. vegetable oils (edible or non-edible oil) and animal fats. India has about hundreds of species which could yield oilseeds that have enough potential for use in biodiesel production. Since India is deficient in edible oils, therefore, the non-edible oils could be the desirable source for production of bio-diesel. In such case, tree borne oilseeds (TBO's) are the permanent importance of achieving self-sufficiency in oil seed production and as well as the expansion of green cover could only be achieved by cultivating Tree Borne Oilseeds (TBOs) in marginal lands/wasteland particularly Pongamia pinnata.

Recently there is a growing awareness on the promotion and utilization of Populus deltoides, a species with multipurpose utility amenable for short rotation forestry and their integration in Agroforestry system. Progeny testing must follow plus tree selection to determine the actual genetic worth. It is a key to determine the kind and control of variability. The objectives of progeny testing are evaluation of the parents, estimation of genetic parameters, and source of another cycle of selection, certification of seed source and developing of seedling seed orchard.

Chemical Restraint Techniques In Wildlife Management (Paperback): Velusamy Saravanan, Perumal Kumar, Ganesh Prasad Chemical Restraint Techniques In Wildlife Management (Paperback)

Against the backdrop of human-induced habitat shrinkage and fragmentation, started reflecting in the form of escalated man-wild animal conflict across the length and breadth of the country. Thus, we meet with frequent incidents of wild beasts straying into human habitations, farm fields etc. causing in the process, heavy damage to life and property of the people. In this back ground, that rescue of wild animals in distress for their subsequent rehabilitation in the wild or the capture of problem-causing beasts and their translocation away from the area of conflict assume relevance. The best option available to the forest/wildlife managers is chemical restraint of wild animals .

Value Added Products From Bamboo (Paperback): Perumal Kumar, Velusamy Saravanan, Karuppan Dhayalan Value Added Products From Bamboo (Paperback)

India has rich heritage of species and genetic strains of flora and fauna. Overall six percent of world species are found in India. It is one of the twelve mega-biodiversity countries of the world having over 150,000 species of plants and animals. Bamboo and rattan constitute important species occurring widely in the Indian forests.India is the secondest largest genetic resource in the world. These valuable genetic resource need to be tapped for food production.

Standardization Of Nursery Techniques For Ailanthus Excelsa Roxb (Paperback): Perumal Kumar, Mookan Murugesh, Velusamy Saravanan Standardization Of Nursery Techniques For Ailanthus Excelsa Roxb (Paperback)

To manage the supply of raw materials in a holistic manner it is obvious that raising technology based intensively managed plantations on degraded wastelands, uncultivated farmlands, farm bunds and other lands are the only way to meet the demand of wood based industries. Studies concluded that soaking the seeds in water for three days interrupted with the leaching (changing) at 24h interval enhanced the germination of seed to the maximum of 51 per cent. The production of higher recovery of plantable seedlings revealed that 50 g m-2 produced higher number of seedlings. With respect to Integrated nutrient management, Integration of 150 mg of N, 200 mg of P2O5 and 100 mg of K2O kg-1 of soil along with vermicompost enhanced the various growth and soil nutrients except physico chemical properties of the soil. Analysis on the economics of the INM treated seedlings revealed the basic cost of production worked out to Rs. 1634 for 1000 seedlings. The maintenance cost was reduced by Rs. 304 and nursery period was reduced by 48 days.

Effect of Forest Fire on Soil Properties in Degraded Shola Forest (Paperback): Velusamy Saravanan, R. Santhi, P. Kumar Effect of Forest Fire on Soil Properties in Degraded Shola Forest (Paperback)

R1,765 Discovery Miles 17 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The conclusion drawn from the present study shows that there was an increase in bulk density, particle density, EC and soil available N and K while per cent pore space, water holding capacity, organic carbon while soil available P, Ca, Mg and S got declined. An increase in bacterial population and reduction in fungal and actinomycetes population was recorded. The fire has made a serious impact on vegetational composition due to the continuous promotion of retrogression by repeated fire occurrence. The effect of forest fire has heavily influenced the vegetation composition of the study site. The diversity indices and the vegetational study help to conclude that the type of fire occurring in the study site is crown fire and seriously damaging the tree strata in the vegetation. The analysis in the burnt and unburnt area showed that the forest has good regeneration potential especially after the monsoon period. However, the regeneration potential has been seriously affected due to regular occurrence of forest fire. The diversity indices and vegetational study helps to conclude that the regeneration potential of the study site is good enough to regain its original vegetation.

Pulpwood, Anatomical, Mechanical & Energy Properties of Melia Dubia (Paperback): Velusamy Saravanan, K. T. Parthiban, P. Kumar Pulpwood, Anatomical, Mechanical & Energy Properties of Melia Dubia (Paperback)
Velusamy Saravanan, K. T. Parthiban, P. Kumar
R2,049 Discovery Miles 20 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Melia dubia is amenable for pulp and paper industry due to superior pulp yield and quality, plywood industry due to acceptable mechanical properties and also for biomass based power generation industries due to their ideal energy value. The productivity also indicated that Melia dubia is fast growing tree with the growth rate of 41.54 m3/ha/yr coupled with multifarious utility extend greater scope of its utility for various wood based industries.
