Nathanael Vette proposes that the Gospel of Mark, like other
narrative works in the Second Temple period, uses the Jewish
scriptures as a model to compose episodes and tell a new story.
Vette compares Mark's use of scripture with roughly contemporary
works like Pseudo-Philo, the Genesis Apocryphon, 1 Maccabees,
Judith, and the Testament of Abraham; diverse texts which,
combined, support the existence of shared compositional techniques.
This volume identifies five scripturalized narratives in the
Gospel: Jesus' forty-day sojourn in the wilderness and call of the
disciples; the feeding of the multitudes; the execution of John the
Baptist; and the Crucifixion of Jesus. This fresh understanding of
how the Jewish scriptures were used to compose new narratives
across diverse genres in the Second Temple period holds important
lessons for how scholars read the Gospel of Mark. Instead of
treating scriptural allusions and echoes as keys which unlock the
hidden meaning of the Gospel, Vette argues that Mark often uses the
Jewish scriptures simply for their ability to tell a story.
Inspired Evidence is a unique daily devotional which covers the
evidence for a biblical worldview from a dozen different areas of
science. Extensively illustrated and filled with compelling
stories, articles, histories, and discoveries of science, the
observations from the world around us are all placed within a
biblical framework to show that God's Word is meant to be
understood in a clear straightforward way from the very first
verse. 365 different examples are tied to Bible verses to show that
there is no conflict between Scripture and any area of human
knowledge - from biology to physics; cosmology to anatomy; geology
to history; botany to paleontology Suitable from any age from
elementary school to college student - this devotional is a
fascinating and informative tool for bringing the truth and
relevance of the bible to life. The book also contains extensive
appendixes for easy referencing of terms, subjects, Bible verses,
and sources.
Appearing in English for the first time, this classic introduction
to the field of hermeneutics covers a wide range of approaches to
biblical interpretation. Presenting a brief history of
philosophical hermeneutics, Manfred Oeming uses a clear structure
to emphasize why there are, and why there must be, different and
differing approaches to the interpretation of a text, in this case
particularly the biblical text. The often confusing multiplicity of
approaches to biblical interpretation are introduced along
accessible lines, concluding with an argument for an acceptance of
a multiplicity of approaches to account for the many layers of the
biblical text. Incorporating discussion of the German hermeneutical
tradition, exemplified by the work of Heidegger, Bultmann, and
Gadamer, this book helps to bridge Anglo-American and German
scholarly traditions. It will be of great assistance to students,
teachers and preachers.
How, from a theological standpoint, should we make sense of
gratitude? This rich interdisciplinary volume is the first
concertedly to explore theologies of gratitude from both Christian
and Muslim perspectives. While the available literature has tended
to rhapsodize gratitude to God and others as both a virtue and an
obligation, this book by contrast offers something new by detailing
ways in which gratitude is complicated by inequality: even to the
point of becoming a vice. Gratitude now emerges as something more
than a virtue and other than merely transactional. It can be a
burden, bringing about indebtedness and an imbalance of power; but
it may also be a resonant source of reconciliation and belonging.
Topics discussed cover the personal and political dimensions of
gratitude, including such issues as justice, multiculturalism,
racism, imperialism, grief, memory and hope. The book assembles,
from different traditions, some of the leading theologians of our
times.
It does not matter whether you are innovating on your proposition,
your team culture or something else. The authors Carola Verschoor
and Rik de Vette view innovation as the creation, development and
implementation of new forms of value. It is a verb, because
ultimately for innovation to happen, thoughts and ideas must be set
in motion by doing. To help bring about innovation, Verschoor and
de Vette created the Infinite Double Diamond Cards. This card deck
is based on the Double Diamond of Design (created by the British
Design Council in 2004). What makes the deck infinite is that the
cards can be shuffled and re-shuffled, giving the innovation teams
unlimited possibilities and inspiration. Infinite combinations can
be made in the application of design thinking tools through these
cards. They are easy to use, versatile in application and deliver
useful results time after time. The front of the cards contains the
name of a design thinking tool, reference to the phase in the
design process and guidelines regarding time, materials and mindset
needed. On the back, players will find a simple, to-the-point
description of the methodologies and tools. Together, the cards
have the structure of a recipe: "1, 2, 3 and you are done when
...". Each card is a point in a network of alternative approaches
to the issues at hand. Verschoor and DeVette have curated a
selection of the best, most impactful methodologies and tools,
drawing from disciplines as diverse as research, service design,
experience design, business and growth-hacking. Because if any
process could guarantee a successful outcome, life would be quite
boring. By experimenting playfully with the Infinite Double Diamond
Cards, designers and innovators will find new and exciting ways to
address the problems they are trying to solve.

The rediscovery of this almost forgotten book in which the author,
the Danish publicist and anthroposophist Carl Vett, is telling of a
forgotten time is a lucky coincidence. "In 1925 I was in
Constantinople, and was, so it was generally said, the first
non-Mohammedan to be allowed to live for a time as a dervish in a
Sufi monastery . Many years of study had made me familiar with the
phenomena of psychic research, and I wanted to observe at first
hand the ecstatic states attained by the dervishes in their way of
initiation - for the dervish orders of Islam are schools of
initiation. Before and during my stay with the dervishes I kept a
diary. It was not intended for special publication, but in view of
the execution of twenty-nine men, most of whom were sheiks or
members of the Naqshbandi order . it has seemed that these
experiences might be of more general interest; and so I have
decided to offer them to the public."(From the author's foreword)
Even now, more than 70 years after its initial publication, this
book is a valuable read for anybody interested in the Islamic
aspect of the mystical heritage of mankind.
The Hebrew narrative art achieves its highest level in the stories
of Saul, David, and Solomon. But beyond that, the description of
these all-too-human characters and the dramatic events of the birth
of the Israelite state depicts a change of eras that became
determinative for half a millennium of Israelite history. In this
volume Dietrich introduces readers to the stories of the early
Israelite state from a variety of perspectives: literary-critical,
historical, and theological. In a concluding chapter Dietrich
revisits the stories of Saul, David, and Solomon to explore what
they teach about theological issues of enduring significance, what
they teach about God, humanity, the state, the use of force, and
the relationship between women and men.
