L'intrigue principale tourne autour des trois fils d'un homme
impudique, vulgaire et sans principes (Fiodor Pavlovitch
Karamazov), et du parricide commis par l'un d'entre eux. En
realite, les enfants sont au nombre de quatre puisque le pere donne
naissance a un batard qu'il nommera Smerdiakov. Chacun des trois
fils represente un ideal-type de la societe russe de la fin du
XIXesiecle: Alexei, le benjamin, est un homme de foi; Ivan, le
deuxieme fils, est un intellectuel materialiste qui cherche a
savoir si tout est permis, dans la mesure ou Dieu n'existe pas;
Dimitri, leur tres exalte demi-frere aine, est un homme impetueux
en qui le vice et la vertu se livrent une grande bataille: ce
dernier incarne, selon l'auteur lui-meme, l'homme russe.
