This monograph is the first in which the theory of groupoids and
algebroids is applied to the study of the properties of uniformity
and homogeneity of continuous media. It is a further step in the
application of differential geometry to the mechanics of continua,
initiated years ago with the introduction of the theory of
G-structures, in which the group G denotes the group of material
symmetries, to study smoothly uniform materials. The new approach
presented in this book goes much further by being much more
general. It is not a generalization per se, but rather a natural
way of considering the algebraic-geometric structure induced by the
so-called material isomorphisms. This approach has allowed us to
encompass non-uniform materials and discover new properties of
uniformity and homogeneity that certain material bodies can
possess, thus opening a new area in the discipline.
This book introduces a passivity-based approach which simplifies
the controller design task for AC-motors. It presents the
application of this novel approach to several classes of AC motors,
magnetic levitation systems, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)
and rigid robot manipulators actuated by AC motors. The novel
passivity-based approach exploits the fact that the natural energy
exchange existing between the mechanical and the electrical
subsystems allows the natural cancellation of several high order
terms during the stability analysis. This allows the authors to
present some of the simplest controllers proposed in scientific
literature, but provided with formal stability proofs. These simple
control laws will be of use to practitioners as they are robust
with respect to numerical errors and noise amplification, and are
provided with tuning guidelines. Energy-based Control of
Electromechanical Systems is intended for both theorists and
practitioners. Therefore, the stability proofs are not based on
abstract mathematical ideas but Lyapunov stability theory. Several
interpretations of the proofs are given along the body of the book
using simple energy ideas and the complete proofs are included in
appendices. The complete modeling of each motor studied is also
presented, allowing for a thorough understanding. Advances in
Industrial Control reports and encourages the transfer of
technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control
technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline.
The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an
extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial
control.
Desde una perspectiva general, la acreditaci n de programas

This book examines how computer-based programs can be used to
acquire 'big' digital cultural heritage data, curate, and
disseminate it over the Internet and in 3D visualization platforms
with the ultimate goal of creating long-lasting "digital heritage
repositories.' The organization of the book reflects the essence of
new technologies applied to cultural heritage and archaeology. Each
of these stages bring their own challenges and considerations that
need to be dealt with. The authors in each section present case
studies and overviews of how each of these aspects might be dealt
with. While technology is rapidly changing, the principles laid out
in these chapters should serve as a guide for many years to come.
The influence of the digital world on archaeology and cultural
heritage will continue to shape these disciplines as advances in
these technologies facilitate new lines of research. serif">The
book is divided into three sections covering acquisition, curation,
and dissemination (the major life cycles of cultural heritage
data). Acquisition is one of the fundamental challenges for
practitioners in heritage and archaeology, and the chapters in this
section provide a template that highlights the principles for
present and future work that will provide sustainable models for
digital documentation. Following acquisition, the next section
highlights how equally important curation is as the future of
digital documentation depends on it. Preservation of digital data
requires preservation that can guarantee a future for generations
to come. The final section focuses on dissemination as it is what
pushes the data beyond the shelves of storage and allows the public
to experience the past through these new technologies, but also
opens new lines of investigation by giving access to these data to
researchers around the globe. Digital technology promises
significant changes in how we approach social sciences, cultural
heritage, and archaeology. However, researchers must consider not
only the acquisition and curation, but also the dissemination of
these data to their colleagues and the public. Throughout the book,
many of the authors have highlighted the usefulness of Structure
from Motion (SfM) work for cultural heritage documentation; others
the utility and excitement of crowdsourcing as a 'citizen
scientist' tool to engage not only trained students and
researchers, but also the public in the cyber-archaeology endeavor.
Both innovative tools facilitate the curation of digital cultural
heritage and its dissemination. Together with all the chapters in
this volume, the authors will help archaeologists, researchers
interested in the digital humanities and scholars who focus on
digital cultural heritage to assess where the field is and where it
is going.

A stunningly beautiful backdrop where cultures meet, meld, and
thrive, the U.S.OCoMexico borderlands is one of the most dynamic
regions in the Americas. "On the Border" explores little-known
corners of this fascinating area of the world in a rich collection
of essays. Beginning with an exploration of mining and the rise of
Tijuana, the book examines a number of aspects of the region's
social and cultural history, including urban growth and housing,
the mysterious underworld of border-town nightlife, a film noir
treatment of the Peteet family suicides, borderlands cuisine, the
life of squatters, and popular religion. As stimulating as it is
lively, "On the Border" will spark a new appreciation for the range
of social and cultural experiences in the borderlands."

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has drawn considerable attention as an
attractive inorganic raw material for various applications due to
its inexpensiveness, nontoxic nature, stability, and excellent
photocatalytic activity. Photocatalysis is one of the most
promising route for sustainable chemistry of the 21st century. It
can contribute to solving environmental, global energy, and
chemical problems, as well as to the sustainable production of
commodities in the near future. This book presents the fundamentals
of photocatalysis in nanostructured TiO2 and describes the factors
affecting the photocatalytic activity, design, and synthesis of
various forms of nanostructured TiO2. It highlights the use of
ion-doping and inert-atmosphere annealing to extend the
light-absorption range of photocatalysts and reduce recombination
between electrons and holes. It discusses numerous applications in
the fields of energy and environment, such as water purification,
gas sensing, storage and delivery, and energy generation. The book
is an invaluable resource and useful guide for a broad readership
in various fields of catalysis, materials science, environment, and
energy.

The last few decades have witnessed tremendous developments in nonlinear control theory. One of the most important of these is the model-based method of feedback linearisation in which a nonlinear system is transformed into a linear system by means of state feedback and nonlinear transformations. After feedback linearisation, a system can be dealt with by linear controller design. The extension of these techniques to include MIMO systems allows for the further simplification of controller design by decoupling the system. Strategies for Feedback Linearisation demonstrates this powerful technique in the light of research on neural networks which allow the identification of nonlinear models without the complicated and costly development of models based on physical laws. Dynamic or recurrent neural networks have inherent properties that allow them to approximate nonlinear dynamic systems. Strategies for the identification of nonlinear systems using such neural networks are presented in this monograph together with the use of such models for the design and application of input-output linearisation and decoupling methods. Strategies for Feedback Linearisation is written to serve academic and industrial researchers in non-linear control and system identification and practising control engineers interested in their application to real-world industrial systems. The reader will gain a balanced view of theoretical and practical issues: relevant mathematical proofs are provided as are case studies illustrating design and application issues.

This unique anthology utilizes the predominant themes of western
literature to chronicle the prose and poetry of Belize. For this
text, the editor has selected the original works of Belizean
writers written in the four principle languages of the country:
English, Creole, Spanish, and Garifuna. Via the many genres of
Belizean literature, the work is able to recount in depth the
history, struggles, colonial exploitation, and myths of the
Belizeans as they strive for freedom and as they search for their
identity. This anthology is a unique and important addition to the
canon of Latin American Literature. It provides a greater
understanding of the culture, history, and people of this small but
linguistically diverse country in the heart of Central America.
This anthology is essential to any course in Latin American
literature.
