Despite widespread interest in the trade union movement and its
history, it has never been easy to trace the development of
individual unions, especially those now defunct, or where name
changes or mergers have confused the trail. In this respect the
standard histories and industrial studies tend to stimulate
curiosity rather than satisfy it. When was a union founded? When
did it merge or dissolve itself, or simply disappear? What records
survive and where can further details of its history be found?
These are the kinds of question the Directory sets out to answer.
Each entry is arranged according to a standard plan, as follows: 1.
Name of union; 2. Foundation date: Name changes (if any) and
relevant dates. Any amalgamation or transfer of engagements.
Cessation, winding up or disappearance, with date and reasons where
appropriate and available; 3. Characteristics of: membership,
leadership, policy, outstanding events, membership (numbers). 4.
Sources of information: books, articles, minutes etc; location of
documentation.
A RICH CHRISTMAS
A Debut Book by Victoria Ryan-Bailey
Vinnie and Stephanie were best friends. While one was black and the
other white, differences among others threatened to spoil their
friendship. It took a strange chain of events during the holiday to
teach them true friendship can make a world of difference.
Set in 1967 in St. Louis, Mo., A Rich Christmas depicts the
struggle of two sixth grade girls to gain and maintain a positive
perspective on life, humanity, cultural differences, social
injustice, and racial prejudice. Their honesty and persistance will
inspire parents, teachers, and children alike.
This heartwarming story teaches youth many lifelong lessons about
love, devotion, family, values, faith, unity and respect. A Rich
Christmas also teaches youth that the search for purpose and
destiny must include education.
A Rich Christmas is a great gift for any middle or high school
student. The book also features "The Secret Scar," a poem about
children with HIV/AIDS. A portion of all proceeds go to education
and HIV/AIDS assistance.
