Intimacy and Ritual - A Study of Spiritualism, Medium and Groups (Paperback): Vieda Skultans Intimacy and Ritual - A Study of Spiritualism, Medium and Groups (Paperback)
Vieda Skultans
R970 Discovery Miles 9 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Originally published in 1974 Intimacy and Ritual is a sympathetic study of spiritualist activities and their relation to the practitioners' secular lives. The book, in particular, looks at the therapeutic function of spiritualism. Based on the author's fieldwork as a 'participant observer' among spiritualists in a South Wales town, the research covers spiritualists services and meetings as well as interviews with spiritualists in their own homes. The book gives an accurate account of spiritualist doctrines and beliefs about the spirit world. The book postulates that spirit possession always relates to illness and shows how this is often the physical counterpart of social malaise. Throughout the study, spiritualism is seen in terms of the coping techniques and the rewards which it offers its members. The book shows that spiritualism is more highly regarded as a problem-solving source than the formal care-giving organizations, such as psychiatrist hospitals and the social work agencies. Healing activities are interpreted as a symbolic enactment of male and female roles ideally conceived, and spiritualist messages offer symbols and explanations of illness and misfortune.

Madness and Morals - Ideas on Insanity in the Nineteenth Century (Hardcover): Vieda Skultans Madness and Morals - Ideas on Insanity in the Nineteenth Century (Hardcover)
Vieda Skultans
R3,104 Discovery Miles 31 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1975, Madness and Morals presents the major preoccupations of nineteenth century society concerning insanity, its problems, and implications. In the introduction to the collection, Vieda Skultans traces developments and changes in the ideas about the insane and their treatment during the nineteenth century. She shows that two contrasting themes dominated writing on the subject: the relative weight to be attributed to physical and moral causes of insanity; and the emphasis on hereditary endowment or the 'tyranny of organization'. The eighty years covered by this book produced a wide and varied literature on insanity, and the psychiatric texts reproduced, by English writers in the field are grouped under three sections: Outlines of Insanity; Psychiatric Romanticism; and Psychiatric Darwinism. These are written by physicians, administrators of the asylums and hospitals, editors of specialist publications, and others with wide experience in the field. These writings have a special relevance to the social history of the nineteenth century, for they demonstrate how psychiatric thinking reflects the contemporary moral outlook, forming a part of the total social fabric of society. This book will be useful for scholars and researchers of mental health, psychology, and psychiatry.

The Testimony of Lives - Narrative and memory in post-Soviet Latvia (Hardcover): Vieda Skultans The Testimony of Lives - Narrative and memory in post-Soviet Latvia (Hardcover)
Vieda Skultans
R4,143 Discovery Miles 41 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Vieda Skultans left Latvia as a refugee at the age of six months. In 1990, she returned for the first time. This remarkable book is both a personal account of a homecoming and an anthropology of a people trying to come to terms with its past and to face an uncertain future. Based on more than 100 interviews carried out in the wake of Latvian independence, it gives voice to the stories that could not be told under Soviet rule--stories of dispossession and exile and of ambiguous returns. At the same time it unpicks the process of memory itself, showing how personal memory is shaped by the traditional narratives of national history and culture.

Empathy and Healing - Essays in Medical and Narrative Anthropology (Paperback): Vieda Skultans Empathy and Healing - Essays in Medical and Narrative Anthropology (Paperback)
Vieda Skultans
R1,084 Discovery Miles 10 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Arguably, Vieda Skultans is the most prominent contemporary Latvian social anthropologist...One of the best assets of this book is its introduction. In its 15 lucid and condensed pages, Skultans summarizes her intellectual journey and contextualizes the articles presented in the collection, thus providing readers with a highly efficient guide to the themes that hold the book together." . Journal of Baltic Studies

"If anthropologists want to attend to wider audiences and adjoining disciplinary perspectives, this book is an inspiring example of how anthropology can be both challenged and enriched by such dialogue. Few have managed this with Skultans's dexterity or determination." . JRAI

"This volume brings together for the first time many of Skultans's important, even ground-breaking essays on psychiatry, religion and culture. It is a gift for those of us working in the field." . Tanya Luhrmann, University of Chicago

For more than three decades the author has been concerned with issues to do with emotion, suffering and healing. This volume presents ethnographic studies of South Wales, Maharashtra and post-Soviet Latvia connected by a theoretical interest in healing, emotion and subjectivity. Exploring the uses of narrative in the shaping of memory, autobiography and illness and its connections with the master narratives of history and culture, it focuses on the post-Soviet clinic as an arena in which the contradictions of a liberal economy are translated into a medical language."

Anthropological Approaches to Psychological Medicine - Crossing Bridges (Paperback): Maurice Eisenbruch, John Campbell, Simon... Anthropological Approaches to Psychological Medicine - Crossing Bridges (Paperback)
Maurice Eisenbruch, John Campbell, Simon Dein, Els Van Dongen, Dinesh Bhugra, …
R1,235 Discovery Miles 12 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written predominantly for those working in the mental health services, this book aims to extend the theory and practice of psychiatry. The chapters explore the culture of psychiatry as well as seeking to reaffirm the importance of anthropology for understanding psychiatric practice and psychological disorders in both socio-historical and individual contexts. The development and use of psychiatric diagnostic categories, the nature of expressed emotion within cross-cultural contexts and the religious context of perceptions of pathological behaviour are all refracted through an anthropological perspective. The second part of this book focuses clinical applications.
