This book constitutes selected papers from the 14th European,
Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern Conference, EMCIS 2017, held in
Coimbra, Portugal, in September 2017. EMCIS is focusing on
approaches that facilitate the identification of innovative
research of significant relevance to the IS discipline following
sound research methodologies that lead to results of measurable
impact. The 37 full and 16 short papers presented in this volume
were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 106
submissions. They are organized in sections on big data and
Semantic Web; digital services, social media and digital
collaboration; e-government; healthcare information systems;
information systems security and information privacy protection; IT
governance; and management and organizational issues in information
systems.
This book presents and discusses the main strategic and
organizational challenges posed by Big Data and analytics in a
manner relevant to both practitioners and scholars. The first part
of the book analyzes strategic issues relating to the growing
relevance of Big Data and analytics for competitive advantage,
which is also attributable to empowerment of activities such as
consumer profiling, market segmentation, and development of new
products or services. Detailed consideration is also given to the
strategic impact of Big Data and analytics on innovation in domains
such as government and education and to Big Data-driven business
models. The second part of the book addresses the impact of Big
Data and analytics on management and organizations, focusing on
challenges for governance, evaluation, and change management, while
the concluding part reviews real examples of Big Data and analytics
innovation at the global level. The text is supported by
informative illustrations and case studies, so that practitioners
can use the book as a toolbox to improve understanding and exploit
business opportunities related to Big Data and analytics.
This book describes the trends in digital innovation that are of
most importance for businesses and explores the key challenges. The
book is in three parts, the first of which focuses on developments
in digital systems. Here, the ever-growing relevance of big data,
cloud computing, and mobile services for business is discussed, and
detailed consideration is given to the importance of social
listening for understanding user behavior and needs and the
implications of IT consumerization. In the second part, trends in
digital management are examined, with chapters devoted to work
practice, digital business identity as well as branding and
governance. The final part of the book presents and reviews case
studies of digital innovation at the global level that provide a
benchmark of best practices, with inclusion of instructive fact
sheets. While the book offers academic coverage of the digital
transformation of business organizations and the associated
challenges, it also describes concrete, real-world issues in clear,
easy-to-understand language and will serve as a toolbox for
managers that can be readily consulted. The text is supported by
informative illustrations and tables, and practitioners will also
benefit from the reported case studies and highlighted insights and
recommendations.

In this book the author aims to describe the path from Information
Technology to Information Management and Information Governance.
This path allows organizations to identify IT Business Value and
take advantage of it. The book synthesizes the main approaches that
have emerged in recent years, compares these approaches along
multiple variables, and finally proposes an advanced and new
approach to Information Governance, based on the concept of
Organizational Absorptive Capacity. Furthermore, the book presents
a new approach to Information Management: the SIGMA (Strategic
Information Governance Modelling and Assessment) approach. The new
approach is centered on information as a key factor allowing
integration between IT applications, organizational capabilities
and business strategy. In particular, the Absorptive Capacity
concept is presented and discussed: this concept represents the
ability of an organization to maintain and absorb the potential of
information and IT investments. After having presented and
discussed the model, we also provide the reader with a brief
presentation of how the SIGMA approach should be applied in
companies. The book adopts a scientific approach to ensure
methodological rigour; however, it is also concrete and describes
problems from the viewpoints of managers, adopting a clear and
easy-to-understand language in order to capture the interest of top
managers and graduate students.
