At the beginning of time there were no directions of the winds, it
just blew freely, and a man and a woman were created as two of the
first sixteen individuals to have a part in this event. In this
story, a man and a woman lived in a giant teepee in the sky. They
have four sons: each would someday take his place in the sky to
take care of that direction. The first born was called Waziya
(wa-zee-yah), the second born was called Woxpi (woex-be) or (Hoxpi
(hoex-be) by some, the third born was called Yanpa (yumbah) and the
fourth son was called Kagxa (gah-gxah). a fifth born son, Yumni's
(you-mnee)birth determined that the time had come to make the four
directions.
Kikto was born to perform the Turn of the Century Ceremony of the
Lakxota people. His family carried the story, the songs and the
wintercount and other items that will be needed for this ceremony.
But first he has to grow up and experience life. His life is
eventful in the days while he is growing up, he meets people, hears
stories and learns the way of life that people live in his time.
