This is the third volume to be published in the series Theatre in
Europe. This book makes available for the first time an overview of
a significant segment of European theatre history and, with few
exceptions, none of the documents presented have been published in
English before. Gathered from a rich variety of sources, including
imperial and municipal edicts, contracts, architectural
descriptions, playbills, stage directions and actors' memoirs among
others, the book sheds light on one of the most fascinating areas
of cultural life in the German- and Dutch-speaking countries.
Explanatory passages put these documents into their historical
context, and numerous illustrations bring the material even more
vividly to life. Also included is the source location for each
document and a substantial bibliography.
Because of its close link with stage performance, the theory of drama is of interest not only to practitioners (playwrights, dramaturges, performers) but also to the general reader and the play-goer. Modern Theories of Drama provides a crucial resource for students of drama and theatre studies. The landmark excerpts for this anthology illustrate how dramatically the idea of drama has altered in the last 150 years.
This is the first book to examine an outstanding decade of British
television drama. The 1980s witnessed a series of changes and
innovation in television, in which a fourth channel was
established, studio production gave way largely to location
filming, and programs reflected key political events. In this
fascinating collection of twelve essays, the innovative programs of
the period are analyzed and placed within their social and
political contexts. The writers analyze programs as diverse as
"Yes, Prime Minister," "The Jewel in the Crown," and "Inspector
Morse" as well as politically controversial productions such as
"Tumbledown," "Four Days in July," and "Edge of Darkness." The book
contains photographs from each program, detailed chapter
bibliographies, and production information.

Secession is no longer your ancestor's concept. Demagogues with a
yearning to carve the United States into fragments are at work
today. Thomas J. DiLorenzo's prolific work attacking the memory of
Abraham Lincoln has made him the titular head of a modern
I-hate-America separatist movement. Armed with a long and varied
list of sources, this third of Dennis W. Brandt's books launches a
full-frontal assault on DiLorenzo's lines and point by historical
point dissects his Lincolnphobic falsehoods. Readable, factual, and
provocative, Brandt conceived Shattering the Truth as a one-stop
antidote to those whose path to destroying America begins with
slandering Abraham Lincoln.

Shell shock, battle fatigue, posttraumatic stress disorder, lack of
moral courage: different terms for the same mental condition,
formal names that change with observed circumstances and whenever
experts feel prompted to coin a more suitable descriptive term for
the shredding of the human spirit. Although the specter of
psychological dysfunction has marched alongside all soldiers in all
wars, always at the ready to ravish minds, rarely is it discussed
when the topic is America’s greatest conflict, the Civil War. Yet
mind-destroying terror was as present at Gettysburg and Antietam as
in Vietnam and today in Iraq and Afghanistan. Drawing almost
exclusively from extensive primary accounts, Dennis W. Brandt
presents a detailed case study of mental stress that is exceptional
in the vast literature of the American Civil War. Pathway to Hell
offers sobering insight into the horrors that war wreaked upon one
young man and illuminates the psychological aspect of the War
Between the States.
