How should liberalism understand - and deal with - religion? Cecile
Laborde offers powerful new answers in her book Liberalism's
Religion; this collection subjects that theory to critical scrutiny
from an array of scholars, thereby advancing the scholarly debate.
Religion has recently become the object of a significant and
growing literature in legal and political philosophy, for example:
What does it mean to guarantee religious freedom? When the
religious freedom of some citizens appears in conflict with the
religious freedom of others, what should be done? May religious
reasons be legitimately invoked to justify political decisions, or
should they be excluded from public deliberation? In the recent
literature, the dominant liberal response to these questions is
based on an egalitarian theory of religion. In her major new work,
Liberalism's Religion, Cecile Laborde argues that the prevailing
liberal-egalitarian approach toward religion is misguided and in
need of crucial revision. In doing so, she offers powerful and
original answers, organised by her distinctive thesis that liberals
must radically rethink how we conceive religion itself. This volume
subjects her powerful new theory to scrutiny from an array of
scholars, engaging each dimension of it. The volume includes a
comprehensive reply by Laborde to the various points raised by
these scholars, and therefore moves the debate forward,
highlighting key issues that should be addressed in the future in
the literature on religion and political philosophy. This book was
originally published as a special issue of the journal, Critical
Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.
This book is a study of the power to monitor what is said,
authorize who may speak, and even to determine what is and is not
knowable within the context of electronic discourse communities. It
tests the claim that the Internet and other wide-area networking
systems promote participatory democracies and may serve as agencies
for communal change by enabling the formation of resisting
subjectivities.
The scrolls of Mary of Magdala have been found Two thousand years
ago, a unique child was born into a world of unimaginable disregard
for human life. Vengeful gods and cruel kings ruled over the
desperate masses for whom life was short, hopeless and brutal. This
is the story of how that young man came to stand at the crossroads
of change and then ultimately choose an untrod path to show
humanity how to lift itself up from the squalor of its existence.

This book surveys the entire field of learning and memory. It
describes the major approaches to its study and looks at basic
assumptions and philosophical underpinnings. Howard integrates work
from quite different perspectives into a single framework, and
describes peripheral areas not usually mentioned in mainstream
books, such as prenatal learning, constraints on knowledge,
nonconnectionist machine learning, intelligence and learning, and
skills learning. He gives the reader a broad knowledge of what the
field is all about, what its parts are and how they interrelate,
its major principles and key applications. The primary contribution
of this work is the integration of current thinking about learning
with the literature and research on memory.
This collection calls for improved technical communication for the
public through an embodied, situated understanding of environmental
risk that promotes social justice. In addition to providing a
series of chapters about recent issues on risk communication, this
volume offers a diverse look at methodological practices for
students, researchers, and practitioners looking to address
embodied aspects of crisis and risk that incorporate UX,
storytelling, and dynamic text. It includes chapters that bring
embodiment to the forefront of risk communication, highlighting the
cycle of content creation, dissemination, public response and
decision making, continuing iterations of educational efforts, and
recovery, toward increasing adaptive capacity as a whole. In
addition, this work directs necessary attention to overcoming
perceptual difficulties, memory lapses, definitional differences,
access issues, and pedagogical problems in the communication of
risks to diverse publics. This collection is essential reading for
scholars and can be used as a supplemental text or casebook for
courses in technical communication, environmental communication,
risk and crisis communication, science communication, and public
health.

Developing Women Leaders in the Academy through Enhanced
Communication Strategies explores the experiences, strategies, and
triumphs of women who have attained leadership roles within the
academy as well as the shortfalls, disappointments, and battle
scars many women leaders have experienced in their quest to lead.
Clear direction, focused strategies, and enhanced communication are
necessary to increase the ever-growing number of women in
leadership positions in the academy. Contributions to this book
discuss the ways in which these concepts have been employed to
transcend the "academic ceiling" by creating mentoring networks for
women, training programs, and other "ladders of ascension,"
encouraging future leaders to be more assertive, self-assured, and
strategic within the academic terrain. Scholars of communication,
education, and women's studies will find this volume particularly
useful.

In the twenty-first century, fatherhood is shifting from simply
being a sidekick in the parental team to taking center stage with
new expectations of involvement and caretaking. The social
expectations of fathers start even before the children are born.
Mr. Mom is now displaced with fathers who don't think of themselves
as babysitting their own children, but as central decision makers,
along with mothers, as parents. Deconstructing Dads: Changing
Images of Fathers in Popular Culture is an interdisciplinary edited
collection of essays authored by prominent scholars in the fields
of media, sociology, and cultural studies who address how media
represent the image of the father in popular culture. This
collection explores the history of representation of fathers like
the "bumbling dad" to question and challenge how far popular
culture has come in its representation of paternal figures. Each
chapter of this book focuses on a different aspect of media,
including how advertising creates expectations of play and father,
crime shows and the new hero father, and men as paternal figures in
horror films. The book also explores changing definitions of
fatherhood by looking at such subjects as how the media represents
sperm donation as complicating the definition of father and how
specific groups have been represented as fathers, including gay men
as dads and Latino fathers in film. This collection examines the
media's depiction of the "good" father to study how it both
challenges and reshapes the ways in which we think of family,
masculinity, and gender roles.

While some conclude from the revolutions of 1989 that socialism is
dead, interest in socialism continues because of persisting
problems of contemporary capitalism. In this exciting text, Michael
W. Howard offers critiques of liberal, communitarian, postmodern
and some Marxist perspectives in order to develop a 'left-liberal'
defense of a model of self-managed market socialism that includes a
basic income for all. Specific applications of his view include
analyses of its implications for the global marketplace, the
changing nature of workplaces, and media restructuring and
ownership. This work is sure to be of interest to social
scientists, public policy makers, and economists as well as to
feminists, ecologists, and others concerned with how market
socialism is relevant to their social issues.
Renewal of Worship is designed for individuals studying for
pastoral ministry as well as for the seasoned pastor. It serves as
a resource guide to strengthen ministry in pastoral care, worship
services, public prayer, music selection, and special
services-areas of Practical Theology. The text is designed to
assist the pastor in effectively Caring for the People. The book
focuses on two important issues: 1) the relationship between the
pastor and his or her flock; and 2), the fundamentals of worship
including: Liturgy; Sacraments; Special Services; and the
Liturgical Season. Pastoral visitation is essential to ensuring
that the service of worship is relevant to the worshipper. Leading
the service of worship effectively requires the blending of these
two areas. There is also a section dedicated to difficult
circumstances, such as suicide and death and children. The
information, specific instructions, and "tips" in this book will
enable today's pastor to fulfill the calling by avoiding many of
the pitfalls that tend to occur "out in the field." The text
includes stories and events-some serious, others lighthearted-that
are intended to prepare the pastor for such experiences...for they
will come.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the most widespread infectious diseases
in the world, infecting an average of 9 million people annually.
Although TB is curable, close to 2 million TB-related deaths occur
each year. Due in part to a growing global response to TB, progress
has been made in combating the disease. Globally, new TB infection
rates have begun to slowly decline and TB mortality rates have
decreased significantly since 1990. At the same time, absolute
numbers of people infected with TB, particularly in Asia and
Africa, continue to rise. Congress has recognised TB as an
important humanitarian issue and increasingly as a potential threat
to global security. This book examines the U.S. responses to the
global threat of tuberculosis and the international efforts and
issues for Congress.
