This book addresses a range of issues surrounding the search for
scientific truths in the study of international conflict and
international political economy. Unlike empirical studies in other
disciplines, says Seung-Whan Choi, many political studies seem more
competent at presenting theoretical conjecture and hypotheses than
they are at performing rigorous empirical analyses. When we study
global issues like democratic institutions, flows of foreign direct
investment, international terrorism, civil wars, and international
conflict, we often uncritically adopt established theoretical
frameworks and research designs. The natural assumption is that
well-known and widely cited studies, once ingrained within the
tradition of the discipline, should not be challenged or refuted.
However, do such noted research areas reflect scientific truth?
Choi looks closely at ten widely cited empirical studies that
represent well-known research programs in international relations.
His discussions address such statistical and theoretical issues as
endogeneity bias, model specification error, fixed effects,
theoretical predictability, outliers, normality of regression
residuals, and choice of estimation techniques. In addition,
scientific progress made by remarkable discoveries usually results
from finding a new way of thinking about long-held scientific
truths, therefore Choi also demonstrates how one may search for
novel ideas at minimal cost by developing new research designs with
original data. Here is a valuable resource for students, scholars,
and policy makers who want to quickly grasp the evolutionary
pattern of scientific research on democracy, foreign investment,
terrorism, and conflict; build their research designs and choose
appropriate statistical techniques; and identify their own agendas
for the production of cutting-edge research.
PRAISE ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR "INNOVATE. ADAPT. OVERCOME."
"Sometimes businesses become so complex that it's easy to take
one's eye off the ball. Generally, when management is truly
passionate, focused, and committed to achieving company performance
goals their business is successful. I feel this book will serve as
a valuable tool to inspire the very passion and commitment
businesses need to remain on top of their game." -Jim Reid, Vice
President, Budget Rent a Car of Southern California "Ken Keller is
one of the most insightful business advisors I have ever met, from
the standpoint of being able to zero in on what really matters in
building a successful business. His advice essentially comprises
everything they don't teach you in college about running a
company." -Tom Jackson, Stonewall Ventures, Charlotte, North
Carolina "Ken, like no other author, has a unique way of sending a
clear message in a manner that we can all receive. He has a knack
of summarizing the works of others, giving his own sound business
advice and just leaving us feeling a whole lot better. He helps to
stuff our knapsacks with tools we can use today and with ideas that
will prepare us for the future." -Georgene Waterman, Ph.D.,
Leadership One, Sacramento, California "Ken couples 'common sense'
business practices with a code of professional ethics and
integrity. The result is a set of inspirational and practical tips
for CEOs, business owners and other top executives " -Lee Self,
President, Renaissance Executive Forums of Northern Virginia "If a
business owner had the choice between an MBA and reading Ken Keller
on an on-going basis, there's no question in my mind . . . study
Ken Keller . . . start with IMPROVISE.ADAPT. OVERCOME." -Jim
Neidhardt, The Country's Most Uniquely Qualified Success CoachT,
Whippany, New Jersey "In a world of overcrowded business books, Ken
Keller hits a home run. He packs practical, sometimes funny, and
always dead-on ideas you can implement today into his latest book."
-Maureen Boyt, Turning Point Consulting Group, Ft. Collins
The economic crises in Asia at the turn of the millennium changed the innovation and business production systems of China, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Taiwan. This investigation follows several different industries, including semiconductors, automobiles, and hard disk drives. It explores the approaches that Asian nations have taken to building a strong technological and economic base for their respective industries from technonationalism to technoglobalism. It asks if the Asian economic miracle is over, or whether these countries are reinventing their economies.

Reaktionen vorausgehen, an denen offensichtlich chemische
konnten bisher erst wenige derartige Geschlechts- stoffe
identifiziert werden. Erst die hochleistungsnihigen modernen Ana-
lysenmethoden, wie Massen- und Kernresonanz-Spektroskopie, haben
hierbei die Forschung wesentlich vorangetrieben. Man kennt heute
Using the Exploring the Building Blocks of Science Book 3 Teacher's
Manual makes it easy for teachers to help students get the most out
of the hands-on, real science experiments presented in the
Exploring the Building Blocks of Science Book 3 Laboratory
Notebook. Instructions are provided for guiding students through
the experimental process, and guided inquiry questions are
suggested to help students think critically about the experiments
they are performing. Inexpensive common household items and foods
are used for most of the experiments, and a list of materials
needed for each experiment is included. This Teacher's Manual
accompanies Exploring the Building Blocks of Science Book 3
Laboratory Notebook and Exploring the Building Blocks of Science
Book 3 Student Textbook. Other supplemental materials are available

In the super-heated anticommunist politics of the early Cold War
period, American liberals turned to the FBI. With the Communist
party to the left of them and McCarthyism to the right, liberal
leaders saw the Bureau as the only legitimate instrument to define
and protect the internal security interests of the state.
McCarthyism provided ample proof of the dangers of security by
congressional investigation. In response, liberals delegated
extensive powers to J. Edgar Hoover--creating a domestic
intelligence capacity that circumvented constitutional and legal
controls. This balanced account of the link between liberal leaders
in the United States and the growth of the FBI will appeal to a
broad audience of readers interested in the American political
climate. William Keller identifies a tension between liberalism and
the security of the state that can never be fully resolved, and
analyzes the exact mechanisms through which liberals and liberal
government came to tolerate and even venerate an authoritarian
state presence in their midst. The author shows how the liberal
offensive against domestic communism succeeded both in weakening
McCarthyism and in disabling the Communist party in the United
States. What was the cost of these successes? Keller's answer
assesses the liberal community's contribution to changes in the FBI
between 1950 and 1970: its transformation into an independent,
unaccountable political police. Originally published in 1989. The
Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology
to again make available previously out-of-print books from the
distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These
editions preserve the original texts of these important books while
presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The
goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access
to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books
published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Critics and defenders of multinational corporations often agree
on at least one thing: that the activities of multinationals are
creating an overwhelmingly powerful global market that is quickly
rendering national borders obsolete. The authors of this book,
however, argue that such expectations commonly rest on a myth. They
examine key activities of multinational corporations in the United
States, Japan, and Europe and explore the relationship between
corporate behavior and national institutions and cultures. They
demonstrate that the world's leading multinationals continue to be
shaped decisively by the policies and values of their home
countries and that their core operations are not converging to
create a seamless global market.
With a wealth of fresh evidence, the authors show that Japanese
and German multinationals, in particular, remain only weakly
committed to laissez-faire policy orientations and continue to
exhibit strong allegiance to national goals in such areas as
investment and employment. They also bring to light the
consequences of enduring differences in government policies on, for
example, industrial cartels, capital markets, and research and
development.
The authors agree that the world economy is becoming more
complex and integrated as overt barriers to trade and investment
fall away. But they conclude that the extent of this integration is
decisively limited by structural divergence at the level of the
firm. The book will be essential reading for those seeking to
understand the growing interdependence of still-distinctive
industrial societies and the wellsprings of the true global
economy.
entstanden."
