West College's incoming Board of Trustees member, Buck Brady,
wants nothing more than to help his wife's alma mater. The school
has been in upheaval recently over a murder investigation and the
subsequent resignation of its president and is struggling to
recover its image. Brady charters a schooner to help his fellow
trustees welcome the new president of the college, but no one could
predict the aftermath. After one trustee is lost overboard in a
storm, everyone aboard wonders if it was really an accident.
As a series of apparently unrelated accidents and attacks plague
the college, professors Nora Perry and Hendrick van Pelt, along
with several of the trustees, suddenly find their lives threatened.
As decades of passions, infidelities, and obsessions are unveiled,
Nora insists the events must be connected. But without a motive and
no clear suspect to question, Nora and Van have no choice but to
partner once again with Captain Frank Pierce to find the
connections and reveal the twisted motives hidden in human
hearts.
In this continuing mystery saga, a sleuthing trio must grapple
with deceit, murder, decades-long grudges, and love in the
beautiful setting of the Chesapeake Bay.
During the final sail of the season, lightning disables Nora
Perry's boat. In search of a phone, she and Hendrick van Pelt (Van)
find the decaying body of a colleague in his Queenstown harbor
home. Drawn into the investigation by a favorite student, Nora
enlists Van. Their experiences as sailors and as academics are
invaluable in the pursuit of what happened to their colleague. The
willful, redheaded psychologist and her formal, physicist sailing
companion discover the shadowy, dark side of the dead man. Ted
Slater had a twisted life and had bent people to his will for
years--until someone realized that his death would buy them
freedom. Motives and suspects abound: students, colleagues, lovers,
and wives. How will they ever discover who the real killer is?
The attraction between Nora and Van is complicated. She's nine
years older and she outranks him. He's bruised by divorce. And
Nora's personal history with Capt. Frank Pierce intensifies
tensions created by amateurs meddling in police business. Will
personal issues undermine the investigation? Dark Harbor is the
story of intrigue, love, and death in the beautiful setting of the
Chesapeake Bay

In the 1960s, Charles Wright’s (1932–2008) star was on the
rise. After dropping out of high school and serving in the Korean
War, the young Black writer landed in New York, where he was
mentored by Norman Mailer, signed a book deal with a leading
publisher, and was celebrated by the likes of Langston Hughes and
James Baldwin. Over the decades to follow, Wright would lead a
peripatetic and at times precarious life, moving between Tangier,
Veracruz, Paris, and New York, penning a regular column for the
Village Voice, living off the goodwill of his friends, and battling
addiction and, later, mental health issues. As W. Lawrence Hogue
shows, Wright’s innovative fiction stands apart, offering a
different vision of outcast Black Americans in the postwar era and
using satire to bring agency and humanity to working-class
characters. This critical biography—the first devoted to
Wright’s significant but largely forgotten story—brings new
attention to the writer’s impressive body of work, in the context
of a wild, but troubled, life.
The U.S. Navy's requirement to implement a longstanding rhetorical
commitment to partnerships at sea was articulated in the 2012
Defense Strategic Guidance, confirmed in the 2014 Quadrennial
Defense Review, and was most recently reiterated in the new
Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower: Forward, Engaged,
Ready. As a means to offset the risks inherent in divesting some
maritime presence requirements and being challenged to ensure
operational access, however, the Navy's current efforts fall short
of the requirement. As an unclassified, service-specific look at an
increasingly important defense policy area, Tailoring the Global
Network for Real Burden-Sharing at Sea looks at what the Navy can
do from the bottom up to provide for deeper, more structured
partnerships as part of a federated approach to defense.

Through this book, upper undergraduate mathematics majors will
master a challenging yet rewarding subject, and approach advanced
studies in algebra, number theory and geometry with confidence.
Groups, rings and fields are covered in depth with a strong
emphasis on irreducible polynomials, a fresh approach to modules
and linear algebra, a fresh take on Groebner theory, and a group
theoretic treatment of Rejewski's deciphering of the Enigma
machine. It includes a detailed treatment of the basics on finite
groups, including Sylow theory and the structure of finite abelian
groups. Galois theory and its applications to polynomial equations
and geometric constructions are treated in depth. Those interested
in computations will appreciate the novel treatment of division
algorithms. This rigorous text 'gets to the point', focusing on
concisely demonstrating the concept at hand, taking a 'definitions
first, examples next' approach. Exercises reinforce the main ideas
of the text and encourage students' creativity.
Concern is often expressed that our environment may include an
increasingly large variety of mutagens, but the extent of the
potential hazard they pose has yet to be fully evaluated. A variety
of empirical procedures has been devised with which to estimate the
mutagenic potency of suspect agents, and the relative merits of
different tests are currently under debate. Although such tests are
of great value, and are indeed indispensable, they are not,
nevertheless, sufficient. In the long term, accurate estimation of
hazard will also require a better understanding of the various
mechanisms of mutagenesis, and in many instances these remain
remarkably elusive. Our knowledge and appreciation of the problem
has increased substantially over the last few years, but the
precise way in which many mutagens cause mutations is not yet
known. The aims of this conference were therefore two-fold. The
first was to survey present information about mutagenic mechanisms,
drawing together data from work with various experimental
approaches and organisms, in order to discern the principles
governing the action of different mutagens. The second was to
examine the implications of such principles for the execution and
evaluation of test procedures, and critically assess the research
areas that need further attention in order to improve the
interpretation of test results. Chris Lawrence v ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We
