As the body of information in the medical sciences continues to increase its rate of expansion, one of the greatest challenges to investigators will be to integrate this information in a manner that is intellectually fruitful and productive. Considering the intended scope of this text, we could not pretend to have gone too far toward achieving such an integration--and considering the pace of change, in its very best form a measured approximation of such lofty goals might be the most we could hope for. Nevertheless, in these pages we have sought to produce a collection of information that is at once concise and up-to-date regarding areas where important developments are impacting on the way we understand the vertebrate immune system. In addition, although the information is geared toward advanced study, we have discussed some basic elements and concepts that we hope make the text a useful resource for both the immunologist and the nonspecialist. The importance of thymus-dependent cells, or T cells, in the generation of a successful immune response was first realized in the early sixties. In the follow ing two decades, a succession of elegant experiments established the antigen specificity of T cells and their ability to perform both as regulatory and effector cells. T cells were shown to be essential in most immune reactions, playing a crucial role in augmenting the activity of effector T and B cells against 'foreign' antigen, as well as in the suppression of effector activity against self antigens. The means by which T cells differentiate 'foreign' from 'self' antigens is based on their recognition of antigen almost exclusively in the context of self major histocompatibility complex products, unlike B cells, which recognize an tigen alone. It is this recognition, mediated by the T-cell receptor, that sets into motion the diverse cell-cell interactions, which control the differentiation and regulation of the immune response. Although its importance was well established, the molecular nature of the T-cell receptor remained elusive for two decades. Many hypotheses as to its structure and precise function were put forward, using immunoglobulin as a basis for conjecture, but "the Holy Grail of Immunology" remained ephemeral until three years ago. In the ensuing years, both immunologists and molecular biologists have contributed to an explosion of data unsurpassed by any previous period in the field."

When dealing, as in this study, with gramophone records, we almost unconsciously think of music. For the number of gramophone records in which music, either vocal or instrumental, does not playa part is quite small. Hence we shall concern our selves principally with musical records. 1. Music may be said to be as old as humanity itself: from the very beginning of history man has given expression to his emo tions by means of sounds. In one of the first chapters of the Bible harps and organs are mentioned 1) and further on in the Book of Books we find musical instruments mentioned repeatedly. Let us quote a few instances at random: Gen. 31 : 27; Ex. 15 : 20; 1 Sam. 16 : 23; 2 Sam. 6 : 5; Psalm 150; 1 Cor. 14 : 7,8. Throughout the ages music having at first no other than a religious character, evolved and differentiated itself with the result that now we know music in all its numerous variations: beside religious music we have secular music in the form of symphonic music, military music, dance-music and so on.
