Der osterreichische Staat hat, im Verhiiltnis zu den Betriigen, die er For- schungszwecken widmet, bedeutende Mittel fur Untersuchungen auf dem Gebiet der Hochenergiephysik verwendet, wobei das Schwergewicht auf der internationalen Zusammenarbeit im Europiiischen Kernforschungsinstitut in Genf (CERN) und beim Institut fur Hochenergiephysik der Osterreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften liegt. In den Vortriigen, die von diesem Institut im April 1971 gemeinsam mit dem Au/leninstitut der Technischen Hochschule Wien und dem Bundes- ministerium fur Wissenschaft und Forschung veranstaltet worden sind und die nun in dieser Veroffentlichung publiziert werden, wurde in umfassender Weise die wis5enschaftliche und technische Bedeutung der Hochenergie- physik dar gestellt und die N otwendigkeit einer ausreichenden F orschung auf diesem Gebiet begrundet. Diese fachlichen Ausfuhrungen mochte ich nur durch eine allgemeine Vber- legung ergcmzen. Die Hochenergiephysik ist neben und mit der Kosmologie das Gebiet der Naturforschung, das den Dialog mit der Philosophie, insbesondere mit der Erkenntnistheorie, nie ganz unterbrochen hat.
